Hornady Leverevolution FTX 160 grain would be my choice. The 30-30 only has so much case capacity and pressure tolerance to push a bullet but so fast, the Leverevolution powder does the best you can do on that front. Then the tubular magazines common on 30-30 doesn't generally allow a very pointy bullet so that means a not so great BC. The Hornady work around is a pointy plastic tip that is soft enough to not set off primers in a tube magazine under recoil.

The more obvious answer is that if you want to shoot a long distance, probably a good idea at some time to get a new rifle with a bit more pep that can shoot higher BC bullets. There are dozens of cartridges that would do the job better than a 30-30.

I wouldn't shoot a .30-30 past 150 yards simply because while it may be able to send a bullet out to 200 even 250 yards, the trajectory is going to be like a rainbow causing accuracy issues. Its power and ballistic coefficient being on the lower side is going to cause penetration problems past yardages it wasnt originally designed for.

 

30-30 and shooting game at 200yds does not go together.

If you want to be prepared for 200yd shots, choose a different caliber.

 

Factories don't purposely load 30/30 for longer shooting.
You can certainly shoot and kill deer 200yds with the 30/30 though. But you'll really have to pick ideal shots.

I loaded 130gr pointed bullets for a 30/30 bolt action to get velocities above 2600fps. Much better trajectory to 200yds.
But, with tubular magazines, you would be limited to one in the chamber and one in the tube.

 

I did kill a buck at 200 yards with my 30-30 once. I felt it was pushing things and had I expected a 200 yard shot i would've had a different rifle. If I had a second rifle at that time. I don't remember. I've had some lean years in the past

Yes but the projectiles they were throwing were probably 200 grains or more heavier than a .30-30 bullet, which allowed a much higher kinetic energy yield at a slower velocity.. A brick tossed at 20 miles an hour can kill too.

 

With Leverevolution ammo, a 30/30 sighted 3" high at 100yds will be on at 200yds.
It will still be traveling 1900fps and have 1300 ft lbs of energy.
Plenty of death there.

 

My Savage 30-30 bolt will produce tight bench groups with Leverevolution. With a 3x9 on top, I'm comfortable out to 200 yards.

 

A 150gr Cup-n-core will be 6.5 " +/- low at 200 yards. A 160gr FTX is -6.1" at 200 yards. A 140gr Monoflex is -5.8" at 200 yards....my bet, the one that shoots good and you can afford it.

I use a Rem m14 in 30 Rem (the 30-30 Rimless) and 150gr Speer RN with H322 that goes around 2300fps+/-. Or I can take a 173gr Ranch Dog and Reloder 7 that goes about 2100-2200fps. It is not too hard to kill a deer at 200 yards.

 

The OP wanted a load "that might be even better for over 200 yards".

 

Believe it or not. The 160gr 30/30 leverevolution load is still going 1700fps and has 1027ft lbs at 300yds.
Still capable of killing deer over 200 yards.
Whether the accuracy is there is another chapter.

 

At 400yds, the 30/30 LVR is still making more velocity and 300ft lbs more energy than a 357 Mag 158gr jhp does at the muzzle.

 

The issue with the 30/30 cartridge isn't long range capability, it is more about if the gun that it is being fired from is capable of accuracy at 200, 300, 400yds.

 

I have one that is. I've had 30 or 40 leverguns but none that would outshoot my Glenfield 30-30

 

I think the load you are looking for is called 30-06.

Accelerators were minute of fat groundhog inside 100yds from my 7600 in '06. They shot about 3" at 100.
I still have some in '06 and '08. No 30/30 though.
There is a company that sells Sabots to handload .224 in .30cal.
I never took the opportunity to buy them though.

 

I had shot some in 30/06. Two and a half to three inches is about what I remember.

I may have 2 full boxes stashed somewhere.
