Here is a true story.
Landowner A has a dog, never leased, constantly chasing deer on his land and many of the neighbors. It CONSTANTLY is seen chasing deer on Landowner B's property. Now, landowner B, tells A, your dog is constantly chasing deer on my property.
Now, Dog is chasing deer right in front of Your (B) deer stand... again.
Do you shoot it? If yes, it's obviously. If no, why?

No, because the dog is not the problem, the owner is the problem. This is where the Game Commission should get involved. The dog should be kept confined until broken of running deer. That can be accomplished in some cases. If not, then PGC should get involved. They should decide the outcome.

But the owner doesn't care about the dog. The Dog Warden went to his house, asked him if "this dog is yours?" (one in his driveway), the guy said no. The Dog warden shot it right there!

Well, in that case the problem was solved by Animal Control. The point I'm trying to make is how many good dogs would be shot unnecessarily because of a snap decision made by someone. Maybe the situation can be rectified prior to the dogs dimize.

Another thing I did not think of in prior posts. The Federal Government passed a law not to long ago in regards to animal cruelty making it a felony. Not sure how our topic would fit into that law! Animal Rights Groups by the same token, could jump on this issue like a duck on a June bug if they wanted.

There is no way I would shoot a dog under almost any circumstance, no matter how much I may think I should. The amount of (legal) grief and aggravation you would be put through, even with a good lawyer would not be worth it these days.
Agreed. No way am i pulling trigger on a dog, unless its a yote. Not a chance i open fire in an environment like the one in question. This dude surely opened Pandora's box in an effort to play hero. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I would never shoot someone's dog for attacking a deer, what's so special about a deer. I've seen dogs chase deer but never seen one attacked. A deer is more than a match for any domestic dog and will stomp a dog to death if it feels threatened. Also I'm not interested in suffering the wrath of the dogs owner when he arrives on the scene a few minutes behind the dog and likely armed. The thing to do is report the incident to the game commission if there's an attack and let them deal with the dog and the dog owner. Some people are very protective of their dogs as I am.

What do they mean by attacking a deer? Chasing a deer is one thing and it could be corrected. Actually having a deer that is bitten and or down by one dog is rare. I had large and small hounds and almost all as pups would chase anything even deer. Hounds are breed to chase game, it comes natural to them. We as owners need to teach them what game to chase and what game is trash. Over the years it has become a lot easier to break them of the game we consider trash. I would never shoot a dog chasing deer, for one thing what we see is not always what is real. We see some and our mind makes up the rest.
Out with a guy and a new pup once. the dog was just over 1 year old and was trash broken, or we thought it was. Well the chase began and we set up to watch as we heard the dog coming down a deer trail the owner began to curse that dog and than we seen two deer headed our way. He cranked up the shock collar to the highest setting and when the dog came into view he let it have it. That is when I seen the hare in front of the dog. OOPs but if it was a gun the story would end there.

Now I never seen a domestic dog take a deer down but if I did I would step in with a club of some sort. If the dog stood its ground on me and advanced than I would shoot it for threatening me not for attacking the deer. Waugh!

There are dogs that are far too fast for a deer. And then there are sick and old deer as well. The law is pretty clear on the issue. A dog we adopted is only about 35 pounds, but she is a runner. Extremely fast. When I first got her and was walking across my hay field, she ran down a rabbit and brought it back to me still alive. Neighbor was in his tree stand one day when she got loose and he saw a fox come running up the hill toward his stand. He said suddenly there was a tan blur from the side and my dog body checked the fox and rolled it. The fox took off again and she rolled it again. When she sees a squirrel go up a tree, she will run at the tree so fast that she can keep a little traction going up the side. I have seen her make it as far as 6 or 7 ft up the side of a tree before sliding back down. We spent a couple grand fencing a half acre back yard for the dogs to run.

I can do you all one better. 3 years ago, about this time, I went out to feed the livestock in the morning. There was a new born lamb following the mother around. Still a little unsteady on it's feet, but seemed to be doing fine, so I left the ewe and lamb out in the pasture. I went in the house to change to go to the office and when I came out there was a Bald eagle in the middle of the pasture having that lamb for breakfast. The ewe was still stomping her feet and trying to chase the eagle away. For a few minutes I considered the old SSS. Neighbor lost a duck to a Bald eagle a few days later.

Since this topic is about deer I would call your local PGC office for advice if you came across a dog chasing or killing deer "I keep there # in my phone" It does worry me if a dog kills, whats next? It already has the taste of blood in them.

Dogs chase and sometimes kill, or injure deer. That's a fact. Most of the farmers near my camp, will shoot a dog chasing deer or livestock, even if they know whose dog it is. That is not something they will put up with.

A farmer cousin lost two dogs some years ago, shot by a neighbor for chasing the neighbor's sheep. It wasn't the first time they got loose and went down the road to the sheep pasture. That day, it was their last.

The post says bystanders tried to separate the dog from the deer, indicating the dog had already gotten ahold of the deer. So at that point the chase was over and an actual attack of the deer was underway. Would I have shot that dog? Probably not, in that particular environment shown in the pic?

Surprised none of the bystanders got bitten? I've tried to intercede when dogs were fighting. Probably around 12 or 13 and watching an aunt's small kids. Neighbor lady was out back screaming, I could hear the dog fight. Stray dog attacking her dog, tethered to its dog house. Tried beating them apart with broom, no dice. Got a metal pail, filled it and threw water on the dogs. The stray attacked me. Whack in the head with the empty metal pail, sent him packing.

Maybe 20 years ago, was working on a property on Green St. in Harrisburg. Had to pickup material. Came back, fire truck was hosing blood off the street and sidewalks, right where i was working. Two pitties got loose and were dragging an old man down the street by his arms. Lady beat them off with a metal trash can.

Mayor Reed, cops and animal control people out looking for the dogs. Would I have popped those dogs, had I still been there? Yep. That ol' boy was in the hospital for some time. Dog owner skipped town with his dogs, was eventually brought back, dogs were euthanized.

Two neighbors said had my truck been there, they could've pulled some stuff off the bed and beat the dogs. Told 'em I had something better in my belt holster. They joked that I could've been "in the news" with Mayor Reed, had I been there.

Over the years I've seen dogs chasing deer and found the results of the chase a time or two. Mostly packs of stray dogs, out in the rural areas. Sometimes the dogs chasing deer were farm dogs out for some "fun".

Long long ago when I was young if we had a dog that chased deer we would take a deer hide and a metal garbage can and place the dog in the can with the hide and put the top on. Then roll it down a hill. Usually after the dog took the beating from the can and the hide it didn't want anything to do with the smell of a deer. Now a days I would probably have PETA and the humane society on my doorstep.
