Less than a month till salmon season takes off! Anyone planning trips this fall. Never hurts to get no BS info from you guys. I hope to get up mid September if a water event happens. If not I will be up 10/8-10/13. Not thrilled about the holiday weekend, but my kid has off 2 days and he is stoked to go again.

Ordered a few hundred hooks, plan on tying next week. Need to get a new rod soon as my go to is falling apart. Probably just get a riversider 10'. Hard to beat at that price point when you only use it 7 or so days a year. I got a bunch of Lamson liquids when they redesigned them, great deal only $80 each.

Seems to be a fair number of kings and a good amount of coho in the lake. As they push in shallow maybe we will be surprised and have crazy numbers again.

Getting to be about that time! I am only making two trips to the Salmon River this fall. I will be up with a group of 7 guys from 9/28 to 10/5 and will spend the entire time in DSR since I have a season pass. Back up with a group of 4 or 5 guys for steelhead from 10/25 to 10/29........few days earlier than I would like but planning to hunt a bunch in PA and MD the first two weeks in November. I have tied about 100 estaz eggs the past few days and have a few hundred more to go! Lets hope for a great season up there this fall...........hearing the browns in the lake have been giant this spring/summer.

Heading up the week of August 18th masscarating it as a trip with the wife to show her the sights :sneaky: :sneaky: .
Going to chuck some spoons in the estuary and out front while the wife catches some rays.
Week of 10/6 for the main trip with the crew. Like Tale Chaser, will most likely end up at the DSR if the staircase isn't producing.
Brother and I will do a sooner trip if an early run takes place for a day or two.
Say a prayer for cool temps and moderate water levels.
First year tying my own, can't wait to see how they'll do. Have about 50 done, with a target of 100 by the 1st trip. Here's a pic of the colors I have done,

Well I was gonna just skip the whole Salmon River thing this year after last years trip produced nothing for me. It was basically 2 days of sitting along the river tying on hooks and sinkers. However I just got an invite from my bro-in-law to come and join him and his crew in a really nice cabin they have rented. Thinking maybe they could give me some helpful tips? They're not going until mid-Oct tho......so IDK this just seems too late in the game for best results from all I've read and seen. I can get away with 2 fall fishing trips before Thanksgiving and 1 is going to Erie in Nov. Was thinking about just doing 2 Erie trips this yr which would be far more productive for me I think, but now I got this invite ........so.....IDK.

I didn’t think I was going to go this year either but my buddy finally convinced me to go. The last couple of years haven’t been the best for me. I had a serious bicycle accident just before the trip 2 years ago, I shouldn’t have went on that trip or even the trip just last year, I was still healing. I finally feel like myself this year….for a long while I was thinking that age was just catching up to me but I have been fortunately proven wrong, it was just healing and throw in a little over-doing it to slow that healing process.

I’m excited this year now, I can’t say that the last two years. For as old as I felt the last 2 years, I’m seizing this year for sure. I’m back!

I've had some great SR trips mid October. Rain and cold will bring in some trout . And salmon will be in good numbers from the trestle pool up to the dam.

How late are we talking?
I think he said they're going from 10/12-10/15. I'll probably only do 2 days of it if I go......I can't take much more than that at a time, that place is a circus. I think he said they fish around the trestle and upstream from it. I've never been up that far I usually fish around the ballpark or behind the sewer plant.

Reading this thread reminds how long it’s been since I’ve been on Salmon River. Last time I was up there I stayed at The Portly Angler, which I understand has been taken over by law enforcement? Not sure.
We used to go up in November as we found the nastier the weather the better the steelhead fishing.

Almost makes me want to plan a trip back up there. I do miss it. We will see now I’m retired I can go up anytime……good luck to all who go…..FISH ON!
Years ago DSR.

Portly angler was bought by the state and is run as the DEC training center. That was a lonnnngggg time ago. DSR is now $100 or so dollars, not the $20 it was back then.

Steelhead season is not what it was 20 years ago as far as crowds. Not Erie crowded, but guys in every run and hole most days.

I just saw that DSR now offers a premium fishing package. Top end lodging, food and guide/ gear. $4300/ per person 2 days/3 nights. Or $6300 for 3 days/4 nights.

I thought tailwater was $$$$, not even close. I'll stick to the Altmar Hotel, rustic VRBO and the googans on the river.

It’s probly been 15 years since I was up there. My how times have changed, I thought 20 bucks was high back then too.
Maybe I should make the drive and head to Erie at least I won’t need another license for that .
Thats crazy money DSR gets for “premium “ fishing…..

The best Steelhead fishing I had was during a full blown snow storm.
The best Salmon fishing I had was during a full blown, dumper of a rain storm.
Being dressed properly is key to enjoy those special times.

If it stays like this for a few weeks when it rains it will be amazing. I think the premium fishing was in reference to having your own private section of the DSR.

That place keeps trying to one up itself. Next they will have live scope mounted to tell you when to cast...
I would like to see an escalator installed instead of the existing wooden steps. Pulling 3 fish up 50+ steps gets old real fast.

Was up in Pulaski last week and drove by there and the property looked clean.
Can't speak on how the inside of those cabins look after a couple seasons of fisherman using them.
You can go on Shane Muckey's Salmon River New York Fishing Reports or Salmon Fishing Reports & Information, Salmon River, Pulaski/Oswego NY FaceBook pages and ask the same question. You will definitely get a recent and prompt response.

We’re heading up in Oct 5-9. Need rain.

in the mean times they screwed up the Tressle hole. Someone had a bright idea to grade down the steep bank , remove the tree line and make a friggen picnic area. ***!!!!!

here’s the link to have a look.

Hello
Is there any local knowledge if her North parking access road off of Sheepskin rd is open ? Early someone mentioned it was closed because of the restoration project there. They really messed up that hole.
Rumors are swirling around that the DER are trying to eliminate the pooling areas and resort to a more natural flow and migration effects. Even going the extremes to removing the small islands through out river.

To be honest we’re not sure to expect.

Thanks

Gearing up! I am cooking 8lbs of meatballs right now for the boys. The house smells amazing! Italian style of course, 3 meat, cheese blend, fresh onion, garlic, parsley, etc.

Saucing them now, just a little bit though, I don’t want to overdue it as they are going to be warmed up at the place we’re staying.

I’ll let them cool and freeze individually and then vacuum seal them so one day next week we can enjoy the heck out of em.

Weather people keep playing tricks. One day they report it’s going to rain 2 days in a row, the next, none and the next, 3 days in a row, today, none. Geez, they actually get paid to do that. ;)

FYI to all my SR brothers out there, The lower fly zone has been closed to all due to the lower water level. The DNR does not want the fish that make it that far to be further bothered in their spawning process. While most if all do not fly fish these areas, this means that those folks will be down river below Altmar so get out there early and reserve that rock you stand on.
