So I traded my .17 HMR for this Savage 64 take down. These retail for about $220 and I only paid $250 for my .17 HMR used but in like new condition so I thought it was a fair trade. Overall I like it and it proved to be accurate at 25 yards during my first trip to the range. I was just resting my elbow on the table and could have covered my 3 shot groups with a quarter. I did have 3 soft strikes out of 50 shots but I had the same issue with my Savage Axis straight out of the box and fixing it was just a matter of cleaning the packing grease out of the bolt. It could just be faulty ammo too. I think this will make a fine truck gun once I work out the bugs and it’ll see more use than my .17 HMR ever did.

Update, I figured out why I was getting soft strikes. It was only happening with the first round because I wasn’t pulling the bolt all the way back when chambering the first roud.

That center ring on that target was only about the size of a quarter. May a tad bigger and it wasn’t even my best group and I wasn’t shooting from a solid rest.

That's good and it sure seems accurate enough with open sights. Are there groves on the receiver for possible peep sights? Peep sights would help tighten the groups some too but wouldn't be in the way much like a scope.

Savage rimfires use screw on bases like center fires. I could put a scope on it but want to keep the iron sights. I want to keep this gun as simple as possible. I may replace the iron sights on it or just paint them. Head shots on small game at 25 yards shouldn’t be an issue with this gun. I am heading back to the range this week to test different ammo in it and take it to 50 yards with iron sights. For such a cheap gun I am very satisfied so far. I regret not buying a basic model 64 at Walmart when they were only $99. There’s is could the Stevens 62 but it’s the same gun as the Savage 64. I guess they can be hit or miss too but most reviews I read online are positive.
