When applying for tags out west they ask for a hunters safety number. Just wondering what everyone puts or is my card different since I don't have a student number just a instructor number?

If they want the numbers you can contact the game commission and they can give it to you, I had to do the same as I took the course in 1977, I wrote it on the card for future reference

That is correct.

There is no number assigned by the instructors when they do the class and issue the card. When it gets entered into the permanent record system, in Harrisburg, though it does get a number. If you contact the Hunter Education Division in Harrisburg they can provide the number for you if you are dealing with a state that will not issue the license without the number. Most states are fine though with seeing the card or simply knowing it was issued in one of the several states that don’t have student numbers on the cards when issued.

Good luck, but if you need it just call the Harrisburg Headquarters and they can provide the number.

Even though the instructor number might work it is not the student number. That instructor number is used on many cards every year and often over many decades.

As an instructor I am sure my Instructor number, which has never changed, is on several hundred and perhaps even thousands of cards over the past forty plus years.

we hunted out of state last year and one of the guys was getting his license and ran into the same problem. He does have a card someplace in this world from over 25 yrs ago. He made up a number and it worked.

When i was buying one on-line for NC a few years ago, it asked for a number. I ended up calling NC's equivalent of the GC and they told me to just enter "PA - No number on card" and it worked.

I had the same problem when applying for Kansas. I had an orange card that just had the date of issue and instruction number. I called Harrisburg and was told that I needed to file for a replacement. I now have a hard plastic card that has my student number, birth date, certification date, and name and address.

They won't just give you the number from Harrisburg. You need to buy the replacement card. I tried. Random numbers do work, but not sure it's legit. I had my old card after all those years, but ended up paying $15 or so for a new one with a number they could have read to me over the phone.
