Head stolen off hunter's 12-point prize buck during processing

BUTLER, Pa. — A 19-year-old nurse who has been hunting for nine years -- six with a rifle -- couldn't believe it when she spotted a massive drop-tine buck from her tree stand in Butler County.
"It was first daylight. I turned around to my left, and there he was. He walked in. It was the perfect shot," said Abby Hiles, of Karns City.

Hiles was about to take her perfect shot on the first day of rifle season Monday, with her family and boyfriend watching her.
"I was in that tree stand with her, and when she said, 'Don't move,' I said this is the moment," said Hiles' boyfriend, Josh McGinely. “I saw him in my binoculars, this 12-point drop-tine buck. I knew in the moment this was the buck of a lifetime."

Hiles got the buck. She took photos and celebrated, but when she brought the deer to Schnur's Meat Market to be processed just hours later, someone cut off and stole her rare buck's head.

HPA Watchdog

I posted this story because of the exposure it would gather on HPA. Hopefully this head will be returned to the young lady.

This has gotten a lot of attention, its on the news sites and news outlets. Someone like that is just plain scum and should have their license revoked. I sure hope it gets returned to the young lady. With the attention its gotten should be only a matter of time before someone sees it at a friends house and i hope they have the decency to make the call for the return.

They should offer a $2000 reward and I bet some people would be sqauking like a jay bird. Man I hope she gets it back..

With all the exposure , it's just a matter of time before someone slips up . I also heard the Game Commission gave the rack Trophy status . I hope this means a stiffer prosecution .

What’s amazing is it happened in western Pa., and it was on my local news in Lycoming County. So it’s all across the state of Pa.

This kind of thing has always gone on. But it has definitely gotten worse in the age of "horn envy." Very sad. Hope they catch this scumbag and lay the hammer to him.

So far as the "trophy status" goes, that is for the person who kills an animal unlawfully. Not for some scum who steals part of it. I doubt the police have a trophy status, however, if the rack is appraised by an expert on the value, it could kick up the degree of larceny the thief could be charged with.

Why steal a rack off something you did not kill? Entitlement society is amazing. I hope they catch him and make him stand on the side of 209 next year reading a sign "I am worst than any poacher you will meet". "Ask me how"....

Today's Butler Eagle newspaper has an article about the antlers being returned to the meat shop and the young lady getting them back. The meat shop said the antlers were taken by mistake and when the person realized he had the wrong antlers, he returned them. So it took 2 weeks to decide you had the wrong set of antlers.

I have a hard time believing that anyone would mistake their buck for someone else's, especially since there is a tag on the head with the name of the owner. In fact I don't believe it. I am glad that the young lady got her trophy back.

I've seen multiple reports of the girl getting the antlers back, even on tv. But have heard nothing about anything happening to the person who had it.

Happy Ending

Hiles' prized deer antlers have been returned

Abby Hiles' prized deer antlers have been returned.
“What seemed like the impossible came true,” Hiles wrote on her Facebook page.
“My antlers were returned to me. Regardless of the questions asked why or how. The main thing is I have my antlers back, and that's what truly matters the most.”
On Nov. 27, the head of a 12-point buck that Hiles, 19, of Karns City harvested was stolen from Schnur's Custom Meat Market in Jefferson Township. The head featured a unique rack with a downturned brow tine on its left side.

I guess the perp couldn't sleep knowing that PSP were looking for him. I happy the young lady got her prize back. :smile2:

That is a super cool buck, split brow and drop tine. Don't know if the young lady ever gets on this site, but a BIG CONGRATS to her!

Welcome to 2017, It is either the market or someone who new. I do feel sorry. Really, I know the angst that comes with that. I hope the scumbag gets caught at sometime. And they cut his testies off because I doubt it was a female. When you bag something like that you don't let people know. Allot of people in this world suck.
