Tradition of an annual Grouse Hunt in Maine continues.
Bullett , my six year old English Setter and I recently returned from a two week
Maine Grouse hunt . Spent week hunting out of Jackman , Me. Second week near Pittston Farms. Grouse numbers have increased compared to 2023 .
Encountered 78 Grouse that were close enough to take photos.
Bullett had minimum of six solid points daily and days of nine and 10 productive points . I harvested and dined on four Grouse . Decided to harvest four Grouse as trip limit !
On productive points I fired shotgun being careful not to cause harm . the sound of
the shot further inspiring Bullett !
I am seventy eight , the weather was perfect, cool 41f- 51 f . My endurance is impacted by warm weather and the cool weather was a relief to Bullett and Me.
Saw majority of birds prior to 10 am.
No hunting on Sunday I decided to take two day - R&R - drove the 120 miles to Acadia Nat Park /Bar Harbor . Have a few nice dinners and relax. Returned to Pittston Farms area for remainder of trip . Many more coveys of Grouse encountered near Moosehead lake areas then Jackman area? More Moose hunters in Jackman ?
Beautiful lodging for one person . Beautiful cabins at cost of $90 day . One cabin on lake other on Moosehead river /Rockwood. posted a few pictures of Bullett and game. Also picture of me , Dan nester circa 1981- my First Double on Grouse , I hunted Springer Spaniels in 1970-1980's !
Wonderful adventure ! And there were birds , many birds !

Thanks for sharing, brings back memories. I did 2 tours in Maine in the Navy. Spent a lot of time hunting on the Golden Rd, from Millinockett over to Jackman. Also over around Andover. Hope to get up again next year.

Glad you came, glad you had a good time.

I'm back from the big woods (moose hunt) this week, currently in a friend's camp in Caribou.

Bird numbers are up this year from last year's horrible lows. We had good weather around the time of the hatch and in the summer. This appears to be pretty much the same across the state.

During my moose hunt we encountered several coveys of grouse - 3 or 4 birds in close proximity. Same during a friend's moose hunt in late September (before the season opened). Birds are, as always, where you find them. Damp seeps, gravelling areas. A friend reported on his annual trip last week, that they are in the side roads in the jack firs, like they always are.

We're happy to have you (and happy to see you head home, LOL).
