It's a crime to shoot something that doesn't exist ??? If it doesn't exist, how can you shoot it

Asking for a friend.

Speaking of badger, it is not legal to take a badger in Pa whether they exist or not. This does have a consequence with other states. I hunted predators and trapped in Idaho 2 years. Idaho has a rule a nonresident trapper can only take the things an Idaho resident is allowed to take in your home state and in the same quantity. So I was not allowed to trap any badger and only trap 1 bobcat. There is no such rule for hunting. Now should a badger happen to get caught in your trap and escape in your presence and you shoot it in the head with a 22, that is legal. I confirmed this with the office in Boise and they understood having no issue with it.

Never seen one in PA. Years ago, when I was a kid growing up in Monroe, CT, I did. Was walking in a field near abandoned rail road tracks with my trusty Crossman BB gun, when I seen what I thought was a woodchuck. Don't know why, but at about 30 foot away, I decided to shoot it.

So I did. It wasn't no woodchuck. When I hit it, it growled, and immediately started chasing me. I ran like only a scared 9 year old kid could, and got away. Later we looked up in a wildlife picture book what it could have been, and yep, it was a badger.
