Are there chiggers in Pennsylvania? Web search revealed yes!! Chiggers are most often found in forests, gardens, and damp natural environments. They are present throughout the state of Pennsylvania and can be found in the spring and summer.

Where is the worse part of Pa 67 counties? One thing for sure Texas has them. Remember having to jump in the shower and put rubbing alcohol in all my hidden areas. That was a waste of some good Vodka. HA HA HA HA

The woods at our archery field course at HH&AA was full of them at one time (maybe still is?) and unless you sprayed your pants cuffs and shoes with a good dose of repellent you were sure to bring home "guests". Also got them once, in of all places, sitting on a bank along a woods line at a local 3B's ice cream place. But I can tell you right now, that the chiggers in South Carolina (they call em Red Bugs down there) taught ours how to bite.

A misconception about chiggers is that the critters dig into the skin and remain active, and people use various methods, including painting the sores with fingernail polish, or using an astringent in an attempt to "kill" them, when in fact, once the itchy bumps and sores appear the critters have fed, dropped off the victim and are long gone.

Can't say I've ever come across any either but I've been seeing more deer ked the last few years. There's also been two instances in the last year or so where I woke up at the cabin with an unidentified bite that seems almost like a cross between a tick bite and a mosquito. There's no crater like a tick bite but it gets kind of rashy and almost creates a faint bullseye. It'll get red and puffy but not hard like a mosquito bite.

I think all (or most) Beagle Clubs have Chiggers.
I pretty much grew up at Union Beagle Club (Lewisburg). We went to different field trials every weekend.
Guys always said the southern dog handlers brought Chiggers up from the south. I have no clue if that is true or false.

We would place a flea collar just above the ankle around each boot. These were non-insulated leather field boots.
Then bug spray around our waist area. Dad, brother & I never had a Chigger thisaway. We kept our flea collars in empty Peanut Butter jars when not in use.
I use the flea collar method today when Spring Turkey hunting or Mushroom hunting to ward off Ticks.

Remedy for Chigger bites- Cover each bite with fingernail polish.

I have gotten chiggers hunting ground hogs when I was a teen....60 years ago...... no beagle clubs around. We had a fellow go with us one time to a farm 30 miles from where I got them, he got them so bad they became infected and he spent several days in the hospital. Yep, chiggers have been around for a long time. Worst itchy feeling I have ever had. Temporary relief was with MediQuick spray. Lasts about a week, I hope to never get them again. We figured out a nightspot with a telephone pole to lean on looking out over fields was their home after 3 of us got them spending an evening in the same spot. None of us ever sat there again.

Just got into a batch almost 2 wks ago now. Interestingly, had em about 2 yrs ago and had been in the same spot where i think i got em this time. On the wooded edge of a development with a Harrisburg address. Only other time i had them, was about 40 years ago squirrel hunting in Lower Northumberland Co, and went back a month or so later, and got em again! Go figure! Lol....but there were squirrels everywhere asking to be made into potpie!

They are for real in Snyder co. Hottest part of the summer is the worst .
My brother worked for Asplund tree experts. He advised me to never sit on the ground under pine trees. The tree trimmers have to deal with various indigenous problems while working. They were also required or encouraged to take oral ivy to build a resistance to poison ivy.
