If I was going to hunt bear with my 270 I'd use at least a 140 grain and probably a 150 grain quality bullet.

It seems a lot of 270 shooters prefer the 130 grain bullet. I think the flat shooting higher velocity influences their decision. I have seen some 130s self destruct on deer size game so I imagine they would not preform well on a bear. My favorite 270 bullet is the 140 grain Hornady but I have only shot a few deer with it. I think it is a good compromise between weight, velocity and construction.

I keep telling myself I want to try the Barnes in the 270 but I have a lot of 140s to use up. :wink2:
Yeah, I shoot a 150 grain out of mine. I used a 270 on bear to say it could be done. 270 is a great caliber, just not my first choice or go to...

I can't believe anyone would think a .270 isn't adequate for bear.
Not all of us swing that way. A lot of us are straight shooters. :grin2:

There are LEGIONS of chamberings that are "adequate for bear" that I would never carry when I was bear hunting in PA, due to the nature of driven bear hunts.

The .270 Win is definitely "adequate".

I agree, it's unfathomable to me that a discussion like this exists. It's a freakin 270 for God's sake. I've written on here before that I've hunted with the Inuits in Nunavut and they use 243 for polar and inland grizzly. Maybe you know or met Dave Marsh at the Harrisburg show owner of Big Game Big Country. He'll tell you a woman from Pa that wanted to hunt coastal browns with her 243, she insisted this was her gun, he was apprehensive but figured he is the backup. She killed a big brown with a single shot and he said it died no different than those with a 338.

The Alaska Fish and Game knows a bit about killing big animals and the following has been on their website since the internet exists. Now they are not talking about black bear, this is for 1500 lb moose and 1000+ lb browns and kodiaks.

If you have any doubts about a 270 on bear then you need to start shooting something smaller until you can put a bullet in an 8 inch circle on an animal. If the bullet is of good construction and has an SD greater than .2 all you need to do is hit within an 8 inch circle regardless of bullet diameter. Can't hit the 8 inch circle doesn't matter what your using. I've taken 3 B&C black bear all with a single shot, .257 100gr @ 165 yds, 270 140 accubond @ 50 yds, and 454 casull 300 partition @ 40 yd.

From the perspective of a guide on black bears and elk out west, I can say one of the first things I looked at was the clients rifle. You give me two clients, one with a beat up old 760 or model 70(whatever rifle) in .270 and another guy with a with brand new looking .300 mag, I’ll take the guy with . 270 ten times out of nine.

I've been doing driven hunts in Pa for over 20 years and have been on hand when several dozen have perished.Just as many were killed with a .270 as any other caliber.Last year a guy I was with took a frontal shot on a bear with a 180gr accubond out of a 300 wsm.He caught one lung so it wasn't the best shot.Luckily we had snow so tracking it was pretty easy.It went well over 1 gps'd mile before we boxed it into a small clearcut and finished it off.It never laid down one time.Without snow,I doubt we would have killed that bear because they wanted to go after it way too soon.A bad shot is a bad shot, regardless of caliber.A well placed shot kills them in short order.

See ??? Adequate.

I'm not arguing the legitimacy of the .270 Win in the PA bear woods at all. I just said I ain't using one nor would I, ever. Too many BETTER tools for the job out there......... several of which happen to reside in my safe. I have "my bear rifle" and that's what I use. I shoot it as well as any other rifle I own, so why not ??

Think of it as the hunting equivalent of special teams in football.

PS.......... Just got another look at the boy I'm hoping "my bear rifle" (I call it Whomper) gets to party with in a couple months........ Saw him last year about this time...... He's a Booner..... BIG boy !!!

I have a new toy this year and it is going to kill a bear. H&R .30-30 with a Burris 2.75 Scout scope. Easy to carry & you don't have to carry a bunch of extra ammo.

That will never work. How can a 30-30 kill a bear if a 270 won't work? >:)

BTW good luck and I hope you get one.
