Now not my first choice black bears but I setting up a Remington 270 carbine pump as my bad weather bear gun. Who here have harvested bears with a 270 ? How did it perform ?
Thank you
Thank you
Yeah, I shoot a 150 grain out of mine. I used a 270 on bear to say it could be done. 270 is a great caliber, just not my first choice or go to...If I was going to hunt bear with my 270 I'd use at least a 140 grain and probably a 150 grain quality bullet.
It seems a lot of 270 shooters prefer the 130 grain bullet. I think the flat shooting higher velocity influences their decision. I have seen some 130s self destruct on deer size game so I imagine they would not preform well on a bear. My favorite 270 bullet is the 140 grain Hornady but I have only shot a few deer with it. I think it is a good compromise between weight, velocity and construction.
I keep telling myself I want to try the Barnes in the 270 but I have a lot of 140s to use up. :wink2:
Yes it is. I have a few rifles but only one 270 and it is one of my favorites.270 is a great caliber, ...
Not all of us swing that way. A lot of us are straight shooters. :grin2:I can't believe anyone would think a .270 isn't adequate for bear.
There are LEGIONS of chamberings that are "adequate for bear" that I would never carry when I was bear hunting in PA, due to the nature of driven bear hunts.I can't believe anyone would think a .270 isn't adequate for bear.
I agree, it's unfathomable to me that a discussion like this exists. It's a freakin 270 for God's sake. I've written on here before that I've hunted with the Inuits in Nunavut and they use 243 for polar and inland grizzly. Maybe you know or met Dave Marsh at the Harrisburg show owner of Big Game Big Country. He'll tell you a woman from Pa that wanted to hunt coastal browns with her 243, she insisted this was her gun, he was apprehensive but figured he is the backup. She killed a big brown with a single shot and he said it died no different than those with a 338.I can't believe anyone would think a .270 isn't adequate for bear.
I've been doing driven hunts in Pa for over 20 years and have been on hand when several dozen have perished.Just as many were killed with a .270 as any other caliber.Last year a guy I was with took a frontal shot on a bear with a 180gr accubond out of a 300 wsm.He caught one lung so it wasn't the best shot.Luckily we had snow so tracking it was pretty easy.It went well over 1 gps'd mile before we boxed it into a small clearcut and finished it off.It never laid down one time.Without snow,I doubt we would have killed that bear because they wanted to go after it way too soon.A bad shot is a bad shot, regardless of caliber.A well placed shot kills them in short order. There are LEGIONS of chamberings that are "adequate for bear" that I would never carry when I was bear hunting in PA, due to the nature of driven bear hunts.
The .270 Win is definitely "adequate".
That will never work. How can a 30-30 kill a bear if a 270 won't work? >I have a new toy this year and it is going to kill a bear. H&R .30-30 with a Burris 2.75 Scout scope. Easy to carry & you don't have to carry a bunch of extra ammo.
