I have used a few rifles throughout the years. I started out age 12 with the 788, 243 cal. Then onto the 670, 30-06, Ruger 77 30-06. I finally settled down, For many years I carried the Vanguard 243 since 1993-2006? Retired her got out the custom made mark V was a 7mm-08 had it rechambered to the 284 Winchester. Went onto the Mark V in a 308. I then brought out the Vanguard from retirement for couple years, then reached in the safe brought out my safe queen that sat pretty in the safe for some years, the Browning micro medallion 284, with Leupold gloss finish vx3 2.5-8x36 scope.

I got my son a Remington 700 bdl in a 308 for his 12th birthday. took it to the gunsmith to have him cut some wood off to install a recoil pad, top her off with a Leupold vxll 3-9x50 gloss finish scope, sighted her in with Sierra 180 grains reloads. I fell in love with that rifle. I took her out when my son couldn't go on days I could. LOL I didn't want to give it back to him.

Bought a Browning x bolt in 223 used it for couple years, went back to the Browning medallion and before this season was over I took my Dad Savage 99F 284 out for the first time since I had it 2004. I decided next season to have her in my hands.

My favorite rifle is the Model 70 Featherweight S/S with a walnut stock with the Schnabel forearm, Leupold, and chambered in .308. It is the perfect length, weight and balance for toting through the woods. Action is short and smooth as polished glass. Despite being a Featherweight, its a joy to shoot with very little felt recoil.

.308, 300 WSM, but am partial to my Marlin 30as 30-30 with Hornady 160 grain LEVERevolution, since I don't hand load. Good at 200 yards. Have taken numerous deer with this gun over the past 30 plus years. I just like lever actions. As for the ammo, my wife's cousin stopped shooting his .270 and .280 when Hornady came out with their 160 gr 30-30 ammo as he rarely has shots over 200 yards and likes the light recoil. Would like to get a Browning lever action in 7 mm-08 one day.

My favorite rifles are my pre64 model 70s in .270 and ‘06. The ‘06 has killed everything from groundhogs to a Cape buffalo and an Alaskan brown bear. My grandfather bought that rifle Used in South Africa in 1954 while on a mission trip. I lost count of how many deer I’ve killed with it.

Another favorite is my 1885 low wall in .243. If I had to pick a single caliber to hunt white tails with, it would be the .243. In my opinion, it is the perfect deer caliber. The deer I’ve killed with it dropped on the spot more consistently than any other round, including the big magnum 7mm and .30 cals.
Been my experience too with the 243!!
It seem to be the perfect whitetail round!!

Over the years I’ve hunted with quite a few rifles, started with a .243, moved on to my late grandfathers 760 in .30-06, kicked around for a couple years with various rifles before settling into a Pre-war Model 70 in 30-06. Took several deer with that rifle including my largest buck to date but after that I got suppressors and decided that to get what I wanted I would need to build a rifle that would meet my criteria for hunting.

This resulted in what I call the Christmas rifle, chambered in 6.5 PRC shooting 123gr copper bullets at 3400 it has become my new favorite rifle. Additionally the rifle is configured as a switch barrel so should I wish to head out west for elk I already have a .300 Win Mag barrel for it ready to go and I even configured it as a suppressed smokeless muzzleloader for use here in the early season.

In the first 24 hours I hunted with it I killed a crow at 300 yards, an 8pt buck and a 475# bear, the first bear ever taken at our camp. This year I took an additional two does with it and saw more big bucks than I have in years though due to terrain I was unable to seal the deal. As it stands this will be the main rifle I use for the rest of my hunting career.

The sporterized Mauser would have been 7.65 Arg. originally? I inherited an identical gun from my grandfather (he sporterized his as well). Found some ammo last year for it. Looking to maybe try to take a deer with it next season. Neat gun.

Yep, originally the 7.65 Argentine, a caliber very close to the 30-06 in performance. Bought that rifle in full military trim for $65.00 back around 1973. The original barrel was re-bored and chambered, length cut to 22 inches, bolt handle lowered, D&T for scope and peep sights .Re-contured the stock myself. The first deer rifle I actually owned. Those 1909 Argentine Mauser's were always in high demand to be sportsterized, and now untouched, original rifles bring big bucks to collectors. A lot of shooters don't know the 1909 Argentine is actually a pre-war quality model 98, with a hinged floor plate, made by DWM in Germany for Argentina.

Thanks for all the replies, and it seems to me that for a lot of hunters who posted, like me, the gun you like and use is more important then the specific caliber.

Ruger 77 in 270 that I bought in 1976 would be my go to except that my son did an early inheirtence on it. Last time I shot a buck with a rifle it was with a ruger 77 in 358 win and I plan to use that for most of my deer hunting from now on. I also have a ruger in 280 that I'd use if I expected any really long range shooting, but iv'e shot that 358 to 300 yds with good results.

I also have a safe full of rifles, and I try to use most of them every once in a while, although hunting one state with minimal tags doesn't accommodate a lot of use.

She doesn't come out often anymore, but my early 80's Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 is by far my favorite... basically an extension of my body when I carry it. It was my first rifle, a gift from my parents when I was 14. Given the lack of options, I used it to kill a lot of groundhogs over the summers and my first handful of deer with it. She's been out west a few times, and gets the nod every so often for our PA season.

Beyond that, I enjoy carrying any open-sight lever gun I can get my hands on, and I also immensely enjoy carrying any "family" guns. Caliber doesn't mean that much to me... I'm willing to work within the limits of whatever I'm carrying.

Is that an NX8 or SHV scope? Any comments about it, good or bad? Thanks

I honestly don't know if i have a favorite. Each year I seem to get excited to shoot some doe with a specific gun or two. This year I killed with the 760 .243 and CVA 44 carbine. Last year it was a Marlin 45-70 and a custom .300wsm. The year before was a 760 in 30-06.
