I'm looking into getting a transom mount trolling motor for my 16'7" Aluminum boat. I have a 90 hp motor on it but a few of the closest lakes are trolling or small gas motor only. I don't want to spend alot of money, I just want to be able to get a little more use out of it. I'm thinking a 55 lb. thrust will be enough on most days. Any suggestions?

I think its more the battery you choose, not the motor. I use a 30lb Minkota on my Jon boat, but I found if you spend the dough and get the best, longest lasting deep cycle battery, you are good for all day. A bigger motor and a cheaper battery is a bad choice, some only giving 3 or 4 hours at top speeds. Unless you are in a hurry, a 30 is good for an electric lake, or a 45 if you prefer.

Check Minnkota's website. They have a program to help you estimate the amount of thrust you need.

I have a 55lb Minn Kota V2 Powerdrive on my 16ft Crestliner Fish Hawk with a 75hp Merc Optimax on the rear, when it's windy out it's not enough in my opinion. I'm purchasing a new 80lb Minn Kota Terrova soon.
