I’m not sure why there’s so much ill will toward book entries these days. It’s not like it’s something new. I remember when I got into hunting in the 90s, it was always enjoyable to look through the Pennsylvania books to see the entries.

Even though a lot of times scores are grossly exaggerated, they provide us with a better perspective on individual bucks, and that's a good thing.

"I saw an 8-point standing in your field last night" doesn't hold the same connotation as...

I completely agree. I can’t imagine describing a deer now without a rough estimation, other than how old I estimate them to be.

I was very lucky when I was younger to have a dad that took me hunting quite a bit out of state. I killed several bucks as a teen that would net P&Y. Since then I’ve been fortunate enough to kill a few P&Y class bucks here at home also. None of them have been entered. I don’t have anything against someone who wants to enter in the book, it just doesn’t interest me personally.

I just mean there seems to be more that are opposed to entering their bucks than those that are for it.
When I was a young guy, I thought getting p&y buck would prove I was a real bowhunter. Back then a p&y buck was a pretty big deal and I couldn't wait to get my name in "the book." When I shot one (1986) he was a no doubter, but I just never got around to entering him or any others iv'e shot since. Every once in a while I still think about doing it, but I can't ever seem to get past the thinking about it stage. That bear I just got is probably p&y size, I guess that's what got me thinking about it recently, and the reason for this thread. Probably won't do anything about it again, except learn how to score a bear.

Whenever people tell me they don't care about score, I'll ask them what was the last buck you shot and when?
They'll say something like "In 2022 I shot a 16" wide 8pt."
Then I ask them if they don't care about score why did they tell me how wide it was and how many points it had?

8pt is just a very crude scoring system. 8pt 16" wide tells me a little more about the buck. 134" gross 8pt tells me even more. 134" gross 8pt with 40" of mass measurements tells me even more............some people enjoy details and others just want the meat and potatoes.

I have two archery bucks that gross 132" and 134" as 8pts. I have no desire to pay money or go through the hoops to get them included in a record book.

Back in the 90's a guy killed a wide, short tined buck in Clearfield. That buck was big news and on display at Grice gun shop and Bob's army navy because it might make P&Y lol.Today most guys would just get a skull mount of that buck.

I had two officially entered about 13-14 years ago. I had them measured by an official P&Y measurer from SWPA. A PA 8 and a WV 10. They both grossed around 146” but the 8 was more impressive. I have been lucky to have shot about a dozen more that would qualify but never entered another one- but I do score them myself for fun to see how close my guess is.

Ok, 18" is a p&y bear, cool. Thanks for the video Fairchild.

My main goal was an exciting hunt, which it was. Secondly, I wanted a decent bear with a nice black coat and a tan muzzle, which I was lucky enough to get. I am going to get a rug made and the skull done, and I probably will measure it like the guy in the video. Trader Dave shot a big one last year, I think I'll measure his next time I visit his mansion.

He has big noggin. And his paws and forearms, wow! First big bear iv'e taken after getting some smaller ones.
