For the past several years, the wife and I have been trying our hand at musky fishing while in Canada. We have had lots of encounters but just couldn't get them to bite when they shown.
First day of arrival on the French River, I new exactly where I wanted to go. Last year, at this exact spot I had a encounter with a giant right as I started into the figure 8. He slowly went past after a brief follow, and back down into the depths.
This year It was the first place we went. I new of a submerged log that is right at the front of a choke down and was hoping another giant would be waiting. We slowly trolled with in about 40 yards of this log and started throwing big lures at it. The 3rd cast I was buzzing a big buchertail through the water and as I got it to the boat and just starting into the figure 8 this big girl SMASHED it!! The biggest fresh water fish of my life!! I haven’t had the shakes like that in a long time!!
We didn't raise any more muskys that day.
The following evening we were working our way around a island. I had my wife up front, to give her the best opportunity. The wind was pushing us parallel along this small island, when again just starting into the figure 8, another good one smashed it! However as fast as it was on, it was off!! I couldn't believe i just had another one on and he had gotten off!! Man I was bummed.
After complaining to my wife, and checking my hooks for sharpness. I turn and watch my wife make a cast....however instead of casting she throws her entire setup in the river 😳!! I immediately dropped my pants and dove in!! Luckily I was able to grab it before I ran out of air!!
She was tired from throwing big lures all day and it was clearly showing! We laughed for awhile after that😂.
I told her we would hit a few more spots on the way back to the lodge, and she was good with that.
We slowly trolled into the last spot, and again I had her in front of the boat. She is casting away and so am I when a small weed patch caught my eye. We had actually already drifted past so I was basically throwing along the face of it. I got the lure to the boat and once again, on the first turn into the figure 8 a nice musky smashed it. What a evening we were having!! So blessed to have 2 encounters within a half hour of each other.
Not as big, but a good one for sure.
We had one more encounter the rest of the week, but never hit our lure. Caught lots of other fish and can't wait to go again.
