What type stand is it....Ladder, lock-on or climber? 1st if it a portable stand one could look for a different tree with a back drop or better cover.....Unless there is something magic about that exact tree location one can move up or down a trail, move farther away but still in range, drag brush/fallen limbs to reroute the trail to select a workable tree with cover.
If it is not a ladder stand and the tree is larger than the body of the hunter ones camo should do the trick. Limit movement during the sit.
I have a ladder stand that is somewhat in the open, but around heavy ground cover and I have bucks come in and under it every year. It is easily spied from from deer trails, but so far no problem being busted with deer or the 4-5 mature gobblers that roost close by every fall.
Also one can set up a mock scrape to get the deer's attention away from the stand area or a decoy could possibly help to defer the attention away from the hunter.
Personally I am not big on a burlap square as an unnatural shape as I believe deer are quick to notice shapes.....like people, dogs....etc. but I have never used burlap.....so it is only my gut feeling.
If you desire is to rig up some camo up, around, on ladder steps one can purchase all types of plastic realistic looking vines, leaves etc. But they are getting more expensive every year.
