What’s it take to push a 250gr? It sounds heavy but like it would punch through well. I’ve only run up to 125 but was thinking of moving up to 150. I had heard someone else talk about 200gr. Need to be a Xbow over 400 fps?
I have a crossbow that’s rated for 430fps however that is with a 400gn total weight bolt. My bolt total weight is around 565gn moving around 300 fps. You probably don’t need 250gn broadheads if you are shooting a compound. I used a 250gn head because I wanted a high weight forward of center (FOC) so the bolt would fly stable and have good penetration upon impact. Believe it or not most carbon arrows unless you shoot small outer diameter shafts will outweigh a carbon crossbow bolt. It is recommended with a lot of research by Ranch Fairy and the Ashby Foundation to shoot a arrow or bolt exceeding 550gns for a complete pass through.
I shot a big bodied buck last week. I hit the bottom of the right shoulder blade which shattered, passed through both lungs, liver, and cut a rib in two on the exit. The bolt still had enough energy to bury 2” deep into a tree behind the deer. I have no doubt this setup could break a shoulder bone. Although I don’t want to try it on purpose for ethical reasons. Buck made it 40 yards.
Last year I shot a doe and sliced through a rib on entry, hit lung, separated the whole top of the heart from its arteries, another lung, and exited through another rib on the exit. She went 10 yards.
If you want to learn more than you could ever want check out “Ranch Fairy” and “Draggin Deer Outdoors” on youtube as well as the Ashby Foundation website. They do a good job testing and explaining the benefits of tuning for penetration using single bevels.
If you want to chat on the subject further shoot me a PM we can email or chat on the phone if you like. I find all of this stuff pretty fascinating.
