I've killed a lot of turkeys over the years. Most with a 1187 some with a 20 gauge a handful with bow and several with crossbow. Always looking for something new so I bought a Savage 301 in .410. I'll be mounting a red dot on it which will also be new to me. Looking forward to patterning and learning its limits. Best part about it is I plan on putting on some miles and this thing is like carrying a toy.

How is the trigger on the Stevens 301? I have an ATI single shot 12 ga and the trigger was probably around 8 lbs out of the box. I adjusted the mainspring and got it down to around 5 or 6 probably. My gage doesn't go up high enough to measure it. Nice thing about the ATI is it folds up for backpack carry.

Like others said, stevens trigger is crisp but nowhere near 8 pounds. I also have a yildiz single shot that folds in half and it is so light and small that I’ve dropped it into a cargo pocket in my pants just for kicks. It sticks out too far to consider hiking with it but it gives you an idea of how light it is. Usually carry it in the game pouch on the back of my vest.

PA Bandit,Its a Stevens 301. It is much lighter than the Mossberg Sa-20 that he had used. But it's still a bit too heavy for him to hold up by himself. He is still fidgety though, so when he goes along we sit in a blind. I have a set of shooting sticks set up and have the forend of the .410 in the sticks and he holds the stock end. It works. My son is not a big kid though. If your son is big for his age, he may be able to hold it up. Good luck to you.

That bipod in the picture has seen a bunch of gobblers die. I can't even tell you how long I've owned it, but I do not go turkey hunting without it and I'll teach my kids the value of it as well.
I called in 3 longbeards for my nephew at that age, right in his lap, and he couldn't get the gun up. I learned a very valuable lesson that day.
Same thing happened with my daughter last year, but it happened to quick to get her set up with a bipod. Longbeard at 20 steps and she couldn't get the barrel up on her new 20G.
That's the reason we own a .410 now. The kids have no problem raising it, but still want them on a rest whenever possible.

We have a 3 footed monopod for crossbow hunting from a blind, but its just not applicable to ground hunting when sitting on your butt.
