I agree staying in shape is a big part of hunting and also will give you a better quality of life. Even using hand climbers takes a certain amount of core strength. I do a lot of running for most of the year, but not during deer season. My son and I are hunting Colorado next September and I want to do a lot of hiking next summer carrying a heavy pack.
I plan on working out more as well . Makes a
I dropped 40+ pounds before this season and worked out. It made a huge difference when hunting.
That’s impressive cspot. Takes a lot of willpower and discipline to drop that kind of weight. Congrats man !

A guy not to far from me is selling this set-up, this is copied from his ad. Anyone use an Aero Saddle?

Aero kestrel tree saddle size large like new comes with linesman rope tethrd back band arcteryx knee pads and 6 bullman steps with ocb buckle strap everything is very good condition asking $275 no i wont take less do dont ask local pickup only!!!!

How are you guys staying tied to the tree at all times when going around branches? Carrying two tree ropes?
I use my tether when I have to go around branches. I changed my tether out though from the normal strap to dynamic mtn climbing rope with a climbing carabiner & pruisik knot. Makes it super simple & quick as opposed to playing with the strap all the way up the tree.

I have $200 in my 4 hawk helium with rope mods and I can stretch up to 25 feet with an aider. They nest together and carry alright for the money. I suppose if I had to walk miles a few lbs would matter but the higher end sticks just cost from what I can see.

Pabone I think elkyinzer is an aero saddle guy, I think that is the older model aero, not that it matters.

I climb 1 stick and rappel with the same gear dce does. I use a predator platform with my saddle. I have been hunting out of a saddle on and off for 15 years, the platforms are the biggest comfort changer IMO.

I also have a set of older hawk heliums that are decent climbing sticks. There have been some QC issues with newer batches though.

I think the biggest key of all regardless of what system you plan on using is to be in shape and learn how to use it safely. Especially when it comes to using sticks compared to a climber. Definitely a lot more agility and strength required when it comes to using them. During the season this year I thought about how much easier things would be if I lost a few more pounds before the season and worked a little more on my conditioning. If you’re in half decent shape just about any stick and stand setup will get you into just about any tree . You will also be able to set up more quickly and do it more safely.
I couldn’t imagine trying to be mobile with sticks and being overweight and out of shape.
Yep, I've never had an issue with weight, but I had some asthma issues. I've lifted weights for 20+ years but this past summer I decided it was time to really get in shape. I'm 47 and my son is 18, so its harder for the old mad to keep up. I bought us ACU pack frames and put 50 pounds in them. I walked every single morning from March until Sept with that thing on my back. 1.5 miles up hills every morning with 50 pounds. All I can say is wow am I glad I did. We hunted places up to 3 miles from the truck and I did really well. Get in shape and get after it.

I just ordered a weighted vest off of Amazon. My workout from my past year worked pretty well. Only thing I noticed is when walking alot with a pack my shoulders will feel it. I figure using my 40LB vest when working out will help that.

I have an old Rancho Safari Cat Quiver pack that I put 25 pounds of magazines in and walk 3-miles daily except during the hunting seasons. Guess that's the poor mans version. Not sure I'd want to do 40lbs but I reckon that would help even more.

I use an LWCG Ambush platform and a single LW stick that I cut down to two steps and added a single step aider.
I sold my Tethrd Mantis and now have a Cruzr XC saddle.
35' of Resc Tech 8mm rope and a Safeguard for rappelling.

I don't see any advantage to multiple sticks especially when rappelling down. Climbing with one stick is so safe, fast and easy and paired with the Ambush I'm under 6 pounds. For longer sits I add two Ameristeps on a cam buckle to the sides of the Ambush. These act as a set of "stirrups" of sorts and make it extremely comfortable to kick your feet up and lean into the pleated saddle. Add a back band and you can easily drift off into a good snooze.
This set up is so lightweight that i simply lash the entire setup to my back pack (that I carry around everywhere) and walk around like it's not even there.
