Worth on 2 custom rifles? (pics added)

Asked about these on another forum but thought I'd try here also since some of you are pretty knowledgeable on such things. So.... a lady friend has these two to sell and I might consider buying them myself but don't know what they might be worth. If I don't buy them I will sell them for her. First is a Paul Jaeger 300 Win mag with a brown laminated stock built on a Mark X mauser action and the barrel is marked alaskan. The stock is scratched up, and it needs a new butt pad, but the gun is in good shape otherwise. The other is a 280 with a synthetic stock also built on a Mark X mauser action and is marked "Barnes custom shop", the gun is in very good condition. Any info on ballpark value would be great, thanks in advance. I plan on taking them to the range in a week or 2 to see how they shoot.

Re: Worth on 2 custom rifles?

Thats tough without seeing them, as they were custom built. Jaeger is one of the best, Barnes is a custom shop in Albany Ohio. Pictures would help me take a shot at the value.
Re: Worth on 2 custom rifles?

Well at least I know what Barnes is now, thought it might have been the bullet people. They're nothing special to look at, if it weren't for the markings I would've thought they were plain factory Interarms Mark X rifles, but I'll see if I can get some pictures up.
Re: Worth on 2 custom rifles?

Does the Jeager have a detachable scope mount? His detachable mounts were in demand at one time.

Go here: www.gunvaluesboard.com for answers. Pics would help.

Yep, QD mounts. The gun was made in TN as per the barrel, I found out Paul moved from Jenkinstown to TN and then at some point the Co. went out of business. I think this gun may have been a standard offering model, if there was such a thing.

Pics later today if I can get them posted.

The bluing on the Jeager is better than it looks in the picture. There is no rust or pitting, etc. It's just the stock that's scratched up, and as I said needs a new recoil pad. These guns were obviously hunted with;used for what they were meant for. To me it gives them character and a story to the previous owner even if it dors hurt the value.

Still have these so I'm ttt in case someone knows anything about them, especially the Jaeger with the laminated stock.

Hows the 280 shoot?
Re: Worth on 2 custom rifles? Pics added.

The Jaeger is the gem. Whoever had that gun built was a smart cookie. I am guessing 1980's, and he obviously used it hard. Those are the unmistakable marks of sheep hunting on the stock, using the gun for a cane. The Barnes is a nice gun, they are still in business. Since they are built
rather inexpensive actions, the value is not tremendous. The Barnes gun would sell for whatever any used Mauser would sell for, $400-$500. The Jaeger is a hard sell because of its cosmetic condition. If it were mine, it would go into a McMillen Hunters Edge stock for its next life. The right person would pay $900 or more for the Jaeger.

Uhhh, I wouldn't dismiss that brown precision stock. That's worth more then the gun itself.
Re: Worth on 2 custom rifles? Pics added.

The Barnes gun is worth more dismantled and sold in components, not many would shell out their value for a Mark X Mauser, its a heavy action, not ideal for a custom mountain rifle, but still a sweet rifle for sure.

Paul Jaeger is turning over in his grave, knowing his name is on something like that TN-produced rifle. Comparing it to a rifle he produced is like comparing a Yugo to a Ferrari...

He was gone for many years when your rifle was made....

Im confused about the Jaeger. I have to agree with Winchesterbob, that rifle doesnt look like any Paul Jaeger rifle I have ever seen. I would be interested to find out more about the Tn. shop and the guns that were assembled there.

Good luck, Tony

They do not approach the quality of the old mans work, but they are a step above normal. Remember, in his time, beauty was just as important as function. Those days are long gone. The prize of my collection is a full custom Pachmayr pre 64 model 70, made in Los Angeles by Frank Pachmayr. I could not afford to have the same gun built today. Those men of that era would not go within 100 yards of a synthetic stock. Concerning the guns the OP refers to, the Jaeger gun is more valueable, however neither is a superstar.

I have not shot either since I'm trying to help a friend sell them.

I saw pics of other Jaegers and they look nicer as far as finish and wood. I'm not sure what kind of action these guns saw. They're sitting in a local shop on consignment for around $600 each. Sound about right?
