Works right??

Since I started my "build" which wasn't intended to be a build...

I ordered a pre-inletted replica TC stock..tang, furniture, etc...had a drop in green mountain barrel and L&R lock..

With the TC tang..track of the wolf sales a replica hooked breech plug..

I can essentially make my own drop in barrels I think...

Colerain makes a 1" barrel threaded with the right threads for the TOTW hooked breech plug...

All I'd have to do is figure out how to get the ramrod to work right?? And of course finish the barren and put sights on it...

Just thinking...I know..why buy other barrels when I can make more guns...lol.

Might scrap the fast twist 50cal idea..I haven't decided yet..the Colerain. 58cal sounds good...

Just don't know how to get the ramrod to work on the half stock gun....any ideas?? Only thing I know of is have it drilled and tapped to take the TC ramrod piece...but maybe y'all know of other options...

I briefly looked into builds of Hawken-style rifles when I found out a buddy of mine was retiring from one of the armed services and he was into Hawken-type rifles. I had several years' "warning" to his retirement, and figured I could start working on one and redo and redo and redo until I got one right and could make it a gift for him.

Anyway, what I found was there is a process for creating the rib and attaching it so that the rod is supported/held properly, and if I remember right, it's not a simple one for beginners.

Google-fu led me to a lot of info, though. Should be "find-able" still....if you can't find any, I can try to recreate my searches and relocate some of the info. I basically bailed on the idea when I realized I just wasn't going to get this done in a proper manner for the intended purpose.

You could look into a full-stock option...would be kinda jaeger-esque? That way you have to deal with boring a ramrod channel and the thin web that creates, but I think that might be more manageable than figuring out a Hawken-type rib?

Just some thoughts, and I'm sure not the authority on it.

Not changing the rifle style lol...heck I'm half done on the stock...and she's a half stock...

Just thinking...since it's a hooked breech and tang...I'm not limited to one barrel..

The hiccup is the ramrod rib..and worse comes to worse..I could have 10 barrels and one rib..have all the barrels drilled and tapped for the rib and swap it from barrel to barrel as needed...

I doubt I end up with more than one barrel...but already think I rather goto a 58cal round ball barrel..not the fast twist 50....

At the end of the day a "simple" idea turned into a build by mistake....I expected the stock a little more ready than it was...so it turned into a build..i don't regret it...and it'll be a nice hunting gun and good way to start learning to build a gun...just exploring barrel options...I'm sure I wouldn't have trouble selling a unfired drop in green mountain fast twist 50cal barrel...if I wanted to...
I really think I'm gunna go with the 58cal lol.

I'm gunna "tiddy up" the stock minusnthe nose piece and make sure I have a pretty decent rifle..

I've found a drop in 58cal..would need sights installed..

Or I can do the Colerain and have the wrong done...

Or...stick with my fast twist 50 and build my 58cal next lol....

Probably the best route lol..

I still think the fast twist 50 will make a nice deer killer...

Since you like building guns, I think my suggestion would be instead of adding barrels, add guns.

Yeah, you'll get more guns from the process than you probably need, but there's only one way to get experience building.

Trust me.....as much as you like the idea of conicals in the 50, and that's not a bad idea, you'll LOVE a 58. If you can get a 60 or 62, research Jaegers a bit and do up a rifle in that style. Might not be totally an authentic jaeger...those are going to be a real massive undertaking, and not many builders of jaegers out there....but you could approximate it. I've thought before of making a new stock for my TC Renegade to make it "jaeger-like." The issue is, once I do that, I'd want to upgrade the lock. And then, well, may was well upgrade the barrel, and all of a sudden, it's just an entirely new rifle, lol.

Anyway, if you want a 58, I'd go with a full rifle for that barrel.

Just my thoughts.

That's how this build started lol....wanted to restock my Hawken since I had the L&R lock..found the stock...and happened to find a fast twist 50cal barrel to drop in..

Figured heck..buy the furniture and trigger, finish the stock and boom..another rifle..put the TC back with original lock..

Stock came far less done than expected...on TC part is the tang....

I think it'll turn out nice for my first build...

And I wanna build more....so I will end up with a big bore!

Not sure on style...gotta finish the one first!

Now that turkey tags are filled I plan to make some progress this weekend! I'm hoping to get it actually ready for finishing this weekend...maybe finished if I goto town on it!
