I am ready to take down the garden. the peppers are stunted and the broccoli has about a week to finish the 2 heads left growing.

so my questions are
1. do i weed the garden one more time real good?
2. do i need to cover it with something?
3. should i mix in some kind of fertilizer or manure? and leave it?

thanks for the help. this is my fist year gardening
"hardcore" LOL. i built a pretty big garden and put in raised beds. filled that with a blend of compost and topsoil. the landscaping place helped me out with that.
so i don't want to mess it up. if that is possible.

I bag my grass and cover the garden with it. I put alot of manure and peat moss in this year and would hate to have it wash away.

You caqn get a jump on next spring and lime it. You can even use the pelletized lime as the winter will give it time to break down. I actually don't like fertilizing the entire garden. Why you ask ? By spreading fert. over the entire garden, you are giving EVERYTHING nutrients including the weeds. That's why I just side-dress after the plants are in.

I put Preen on my garden before I planted it, fertilizer and herbicide, I got tired of the landscape cloth. I didn't have a weed all summer. I also side dressed and used miracle grow. You can bet I will use preen again next year. Using the suggested epsom salts on my peppers and tomatoes I had a fantastic harvest, numbers and size.

thanks guys!

i will just take care of it in the summer. it makes a lot of sense not wanting to feed the weeds and such.

i did steal the salt thing for my peppers and tomatoes and it worked great for me. i did loose a lot of tomatoes to blight or some other problem. i blamed the rain.

thanks for the help. this site has helped a lot

Don't feel bad. About everybody down here that I spoke to suffered from blight.

John S. you've grabbed my attention. Preen ? Care to add more ?

The guy at the hardware store called it Preen but that is not on the label, it is made by miracle grow, weed control and fertilizer. You put it on after the soil is prepared. You can use it after planting but it worked well enugh for me that I didn't have to. My garden isn't as big as yours I am sure, the gallon shaker container was big enough with some left over. I don't know if it comes in larger bags. I had never heard of it before this year.

Interesting John. So it's just put on like a pelletized lime? It eliminates the weeds? How much was it?

Is anyone thinking of putting down some sort of fungacide to
maybe stop any blight in next years garden.I've completely cleaned the garden just thinking a fungacide may eliminate any spores in the soil.

I've used Preen on flower beds and it works well.

$25 for the big box of the stuff.
