I bought a new Honda Rancher (2016 model) a few months ago. Time to put a winch on.

1) Everyone has their opinion, granted, but what 2500 lb winch do you like/not like? Main uses will be pulling logs, plowing etc. Little or no trail riding.

2) On a scale of 1-3, how difficult is install?

I want to do it myself, but dealer quoted 329 for Kolpin winch install. Thanks.

That price doesn’t sound too bad to me installed. Pretty much as long as you don’t buy a generic brand wench you’ll be fine. I’ve had superwinch in a few warns. Install isn’t that terrible as long as you buy the factory style bracket and not a universal fit. Wiring is probably the hardest part if you don’t know what you’re doing but really not that bad.

Is your Honda set up for a winch or do you need an additional bracket or mount?

I'd price the cost of the Koplin winch and any additional mounts if needed and then compare the price to the dealers price to mount the winch. If it was close I'd let him do it.

If the price is not close you can do it yourself. It is not hard. Be sure to use the recommended gage wiring. It should come with the winch but if it doesn't don't skimp and try to get by with 12 gage when 6 gage is recommended.

Id recommend you look at installation videos on YouTube to get an idea of what is involved.

Then I'd shop for winches on a place like Amazon and look at all the reviews posted by previous buyers for the advertised winches. You'll get a good idea of which winches are better than others.

Team Dougherty mentioned Harbor Freight. I read a recent review that had good things to say about their winch and it was priced cheap. So cheap that I was thinking about putting one on my son's ATV to use with the plow.

Good luck!

I will need the specific mounting bracket and install kit/wiring. I have looked at amazon and youtube and there is no doubt that I can do it myself...but...the install price from the dealer seems pretty reasonable. especially considering the additional cost of kit, mount and my tendency to foul things up.

As far as reviews, it's like most other things. One guy loves a particular winch and the next guy had a bad experience. Unless reviews are overwhelmingly positive or negative I tend to take them with a grain of salt. The kolpin get modest reviews on cabelas, good reviews on amazon, and Top 5 status on ATV.com.

I don't have any experience with the kolpin winches, but I would stay away from superwinch or any cheaper, off brands. They are slow and not nearly as strong as the warns. I installed 2500 pound warns on my last two which isn't too bad. I'm not a mechanic and I didn't have too much trouble.
