YES, proved my answer many many times with both species. Just like other animals, some come charging, others aren't as brave but it can be done.

only ever called one cat and i was in the woods but grey fox will cross hundreds of yards of open feild to get to a call.

January a couple of years ago I had two cats (male and female I'm guessing)run across an open field to get to my critter call. I was totally shocked because it was 11am in the morning. Several grays have done the same. On Foxpro's TV show they filmed a gray fox chase away a cat that was first to respond.
