I've seen planting rye in food plots mentioned here.

What types of rye are best? Are you talking about the same type of rye that farmers plant for grain?

Or are you talking about wild rye grass? Which is planted for wildlife sometimes, but not for a grain crop. I think. I'm trying to learn more about this.

You want to use the cereal rye grain that farmers use. It works great as a winter food source, and it helps build your soil. Rye germinates down to 36F and grows down to 34F.

Ask for winter rye at your local co-op or seed store. Should be around $16 for 40 lbs. About 30 lbs an acre.

Any winter rye should work well. Like others have mentioned, NO rye grass.
