The best time of day for grouse hunting is the time of day you can get out to hunt.

In all honesty it depends if you have a dog. Wingshooters can get on them all day in good cover. Others without a dog like to tree spot them in the evening and get them that way.

When I was younger 4 of us would walk the woods in a line like you would in a pheasant field. We'd get a few a year that way. Most we would get in early morning that way.

I have no clue but it sure is fun trying. I get after them whenever I can.

I agree about the last hour of the day being best but I get out whenever I can.

Matt,
This is how we train and Grouse hunt here at Pine Creek Grouse Dog trainers. We leave here at about 7:30-8:00 AM
we train and hunt until about 12:00 then we give the dogs and ourselves a lunch break, from 12:00 to about 1:00 PM.
We then move to a completely different mountain and hunt/train until dark. This particular season 80% of all Grouse taken have been from 2:00 PM until dark.
