I believe its an insect "cacoon". They get inside the leaf somehow, and affect the vascular system, and it turns into that.

I think it's actually from a wasp that lays its eggs inside the leaf.

I have always heard them called oak apples.............it is from a wasp

Thanks for the giggles and info..Oak wasp gall seems to be the correct ID. I never came accross one before at that state of maturity and hadn't a clue as to what it was and after a google search on your answers it became obvious what it was....over the hill and still learnin'
