After several frustrating hunts in the past couple of years, it finally all came together for the Wee Man! We hunted with friends in Kittanning Saturday. With a 2D doe tag in hand I told him the first deer we saw, buck, doe, big or little, we were going to take the shot. He had been hammering the squirrels all fall with his .22 so I had been telling him the .243 was just a loud .22 and a deer was just a big squirrel. We climbed up in our digs for the day just before first light....

At 7:45Am, I looked to my right and saw an antlerless deer standing in a shooting lane. It was about 30 yards away and quartering slightly toward us. Wee Man got set up and I reminded him once again that .243 was just a loud .22 and that deer was just a big squirrel. He settled in, and squeezed off a round. At the shot, the deer jumped, mule kicked and then went straight down. He saw it all in the scope but his mind wasn't able to process it. I just kept saying, "You got it! You got it!" over and over. After a few seconds it all sank in and he began to run the gamut of emotions. I wish I would have videoed him when the shakes hit. We gave the deer a couple minutes (more for his benefit, I didn't need him missing a step in all his excitement) and headed over to his deer. His shot on the chubby button buck was perfect and from this picture, you can see who's on cloud 9......

We spent the better part of the day in the stand trying to fill his buck tag. We had a small basket rack and a spike run by but neither would stop and offer a shot. In all, we saw 19 deer. We headed home and over to my neighbor's where we got to the butchering process. The Wee Man dug in enthusiastically. I put him in charge of cleaning up the burger meat. By the time he was done, It looked like the vultures got after his deer. There wasn't a piece of meat left on it.....

This was the single best day of hunting I'll ever have. The rifle he used was my Remington model 788 .243 my dad got me when I was 12 and I shot my first deer with (a button buck). I told him since he shot a deer with it, I guess it was his now. I'm so proud of the young man he's becoming.
