What's everybody using to wash their hunting clothing, especially wool. I've been using Sport Wash and cold water on the hand wash cycle of washing machine. I'm not happy with the way it turns out, even the mud doesn't all come out. I would like something that doesn't have any UV brighteners in it.

You might want to take the machine off of hand wash cycle,maybe a little more agitation will help loosen the mud. Just a thought.

I was thinking that myself, guess what I'm fishing for is, does anybody know of some other detergent that's good for wool and also has no UV brightener in it?

I use the Scent Killer powdered detergent. It seems to work pretty well and has no UV brightners.

i use the Scent Shield Clothes Wash mainly cause it doesnt cause camo to fade like many home detergents.

I use Cheer Free and Gentle (powder). It is scent free and has no UV brighteners in it. Looking at the prices as an example Scent Killer detergent cost 3 times as much as the Cheer. Note - the Cheer liquid detergent has UV brighteners in it.

Last year the Missus washed my Blaze Orange Hunting coat in some kind of Ultra U.V. detergent. I glowed like a Jack o Lantern!!! Can only imagine what I looked like to a Deer!!! I was going to beat Her, but She is bigger than me and I bleed easily.....

I too have used Cheer, Free and Gentle. No perfumes, no dyes, no uv brighteners.

My only note is I don't know if the Cheer formula has changed any. My shelf supply has two bottles left, just for hunting.

I am experimenting with a homemade detergent, which is suppose to contain non uv brighteners. I still have the old black light, so I have a "dark room" to test it out.

Let you all know what I find out. Hopefully, in the next week. I have some archery deer hunting in January, so I have to get certain clothes ready. Have some non hunting type gear, I have to try.

They changed the label of Cheer Free & Gentle. It says "Bright Clean" on it now. I contacted the manufacturer and they responded with this:

"Thank you for contacting Cheer. I would be happy to answer your question conerning Cheer having Optical Brighteners in the formula. The Cheer Free and Gentle Powder does not contain brighteners but the liquid does. Thanks again, Torie Cheer Team".

I make my own, Its easy and cheap.

1 bar of Fels Naptha grated fine.
1 cup of A&H washing soda
1 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax

Put in a container that will hold 2 cups of laundry detergent. Shake, or stir well, and store in closed container.

Now, the best part: use only 1 tablespoon per load.

Huntsman, thanks for that new research on Cheer.

I found Cheer on an army site for BDU's. I notice they may now opt for any type of detergent.

I just tried that old standby, Baking Soda and 20 Mule Team Borox. Instead of Fels Napha, another old standby, I used some clear scentless liquid soap. (It's the same soap Ive used for over a decade for hunting showers.-Walmart) Still testing, mixing as I need it, for each wash. So far the result is good, with the scentless clothing and non UV showing under the black light in the "dark room".

In fact, I'm going to use the latter, this winter, to wash all my "around the house" clothing with the end formula.

Got away from scented detergent years ago, and might as well save money.

I used the Tide Free this season and noticed no differnce from the more expensive Hunting Brands. It's scent free but I'm not sure about the UV qualities
