I grow a few tomatoes, peppers and some corn and green beans. Last year my sugar baby watermelons did pretty well. The watermelons are as exotic as I get. I don't get too far into soil amendments, a little lime and some composting.

I grow a lot of sweet corn and green/ yellow beans…I shoot for 200 dozen ears, and 10 bushel of beans. Usually grow 5-7 bushel of potatoes, beets, carrots, onions and zucchini. Last year I planted a lot of pumpkins, ended up with over 50 good ones.

I only plant a few tomato and pepper plants, as my buddy has many extra bushels of both.

I sell sweet corn and beans every summer. I take pre orders, and folks pick up their stuff fresh the day I pick. I’m not a big fan of hot peppers, but I grow some ghost peppers every summer. I dry them, and make a “tea” out of them to spray on plants to repel deer, rabbits, and groundhogs.

We can green and yellow beans, potatoes, carrots, pickled beets, spaghetti sauce, tomato juice and pickles.
We freeze corn and peppers.

Does that ghost pepper tea spray work on bugs??
We freeze about 5 or 6 dozen ears of corn (blanched, ice-bath-cooled & cut off the cobs) every summer. Canning plain beets or tomatoes is easy. We went to refrigerator pickles from fresh cukes the last few years. Lots of good recipes out there for those.

Doesn’t work on bugs. But critters won’t touch stuff spayed with it.

Anyone have veggies started from seeds in peat pots or plastic containers?? If so - what do you have started & how big are they??
I have not started yet as I usually will wait until the first week of April. I have not had success with peat pots. I typically use extra large egg cartons and pack potting soil in it and sow seeds. I'll transplant usually after 4 weeks. Normally, I grow a variety of tomatoes and peppers in the containers for transplanting since everything else is directly sown. This weekend I'm hoping to get snap peas planted.

Hey treemouse -

Are those yogurt cups with the tomatoes & peppers started in them? If so, how have they worked for you? Any drainage holes in the bottoms??
Yes, great, and yes. Used them for years. Take about six at a time, and drill a bunch of holes thru the whole stack. I got a boxfull of them. Plus picked up a lot of different size pots on trash days, walking dogs around the neighborhood over the yrs.

I get loads of leaf compost from our township facility. I've spread it on the lawn, in new beds, mix it in pots. They have access card reader with powered gate now. Costs $10 a yr. to renew your card. Too many outsiders were coming in.
