Going to tow a U-Haul behind my Dodge 1500 with the bed loaded down as well. New at this stuff and need to know what gear I should have the truck in for the trip.

Kind of think just put her in "D" and watch out for speed traps.

But then -- not too sure about the gear I should be in so I need some help.

Jim I towed a 5 x 10 trailer with two quads and several large coolers filled with cases of beer and hunting gear for 3 guys down to North Carolina. Most of the hunting gear in bed. I have no problem driving in D. Plenty of power in the Hemi and still got 18 to 19 mpg. Most times usually have 5 or 6 deer in The coolers on the trip back north.

When you load your truvk ed keep most of the weight around and over your rear wheels or you steering can get squirrely if you have to do a fast maneuver.

Do you have a tow/haul button if so and you notice the transmission shifting more than normal use that button which takes out top gear/gears and puts less strain on tranny. Power wise you will be fine it is just finding out where the tranny doesn't need to work hard.
