Such a shame. Very nice place to stay.

Tom's Run shelter on Appalachian Trail is destroyed by fire

The Tom's Run camp shelter along the Appalachian Trail in Michaux State Forest was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon, said a state forest manager.

The state police fire marshal will be asked to investigate, said Rod Lion, assistant state forest manager at Michaux. The shelter is about a mile from Michaux Road, and is near the midpoint on the Appalachian Trail.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the shelter, which is open on one side, was destroyed, Lion said. A second shelter at the site was not damaged, he said.

Sad to hear this . Being too close to the road has some disadvantages . This shelter has been trashed many times .

It has not been said if it was vandalism or carelessness with a campfire or something else.

Odd time for either case too. At least there is a second one available.

No camp fires are permitted there, but I have seen stone fire rings in the past. Not sure if they found out yet what caused it. Report says it happened in the afternoon. Not sure who reported it, maybe a hiker, hunter or maybe someone saw the smoke off Michaux Road.
