I was fishing Penns Creek in Central PA and came across this guy. I am pretty sure its a dark phase timber rattler, but it did not rattle. I gave it a gentle nudge with my fly rod to see if it would rattle, but got no sound. Is it a rattlesnake?

Rattlesnakes are pit vipers, if you look at your first pic you can easily see the pit low between the eye and nose hole.

first picture of one I ever saw. never realized there was rattlesnakes in the Union County area with all the fishing and hunting I did in the area. But that was many years ago.

I've picked a number of them up with a stick to move them off the road. Some of them will coil and buzz when I pick them up and others don't.
