For under $300 I would take a good look at the PSE Copperhead. It's a good solid bow. We had one here this summer that we shot over 1200 shots through. It's still going strong.

How is that bow cocked and de-cocked?

With the PSE Copperhead, we just grab the string, throw the safety off, hold tightly on the string and pull the trigger. It's fairly easy to let down that way. Don't do it if you have shoulder/back problems.
I'll make a post soon, with instructions of how we have been unloading our crossbows. I think I've finally come up with a good solution.
