Thinking of buying a newer (16/17) diesel long bed truck, Im usually towing something with my truck, tired of 7-9 MPG and the small gas tank, so Im thinking of a diesel. Ive stayed away in the past from diesels for a 3 reasons, the cost of maintenance, the noise they generate and the smell of burning diesel.

So talk to me about the good and bad, Ive been a chevy guy for years but Im open to any suggestions.

I have no experience with diesel trucks but in my mind the additional cost of the fuel outweighs much of the additional MPG and longevity of the motor.

I tow a heavy horse trailer frequently and for long distances and have had diesels and big V8's.My take is simple.If you do it often and far,a diesel may be worth it.The maintenance is more,the fuel is more and the truck is way more.Not every gas station has diesel and it seems that there's always someone blocking the diesel pump getting at the one's who sell it.Unless you tow heavy loads very frequently,it's not worth it in my experience.I just sold a duramax because my daughter is in college and I'm not hauling her to rodeo's all over the east coast.I still need a big truck so I just bought a ram 2500 with a 6.4 hemi.It still tow but it's not as often and not as far so it makes much more sense.

The only thing I will say on top of what dce said is resell value of the truck down the road. The diesel will be worth its weight in gold when it's time to get rid of it and upgrade down the road so not all will be lost on upfront cost. Check out some 06-07crew cab duramax and Cummins trucks with under 100,000 miles some still selling for over $30,000!!! That truck new back then wouldn't of costed you much more then that. Now granted those are pre-emission diesels but you never know what 10 years down the road what your diesel will be worth. If it was me and the extra $10,000 didn't bother me I would absolutely own a new diesel over a gas truck. I only tow 7000lbs so my 1500 sierra suits me just fine.

i have a 07 duramax bought new and if you tow often it is well worth it. nearly double the fuel mileage, tows at lower rpms so noise wont be an issue, resale value, maint. isnt all that more in cost if you can service it yourself. if your towing alot the question should be why dont i have a diesel.

I'm towing 6300lbs now, but id like to upgrade to a bigger travel trailer, most times I'm using my truck I'm towing something, or going on a 500 plus mile trip. Not to mention I'm probably going to retire for good in a couple of years, I could see getting a fifth wheel and cruising the country

There is truth to that.Four years ago,I bought an 06 duramax with 125k miles for $13k.The guy just wanted the pay off so that's what I gave him.I put another 100k hard miles on it it four years towing and plowing snow without ever putting a dime into it,other than routine maintenance.I didn't get all that good of fuel mileage though.It got about 14 mpg running around and pretty close to that when towing.Unfortunately,the underneath pretty much rotted away so I sold it to my buddy for 6k but I have seen that year sell for over 27k recently..My Ram get's about 14 mpg running around and about 9 mpg when I tow.Gas is cheaper than diesel and I don't tow as much as I used to so it works out.

My biggest complaint was they're kind of a pain in the winter and I'd get road rage everytime I went to fuel up and some jackwagon was at the only diesel pump getting gas when 5 other gas pumps were empty.It never failed.

i have gotten 22 mpg empty on the hwy and get 15-16 mpg towing. i have never plugged my truck in for winter and never had any issues starting it even at -17 degrees. guarantee if all the other pumps are open there will be some moron taking their time filling up with gas at the diesel pump.

my buddy has a '15 duramax. we've taken it bear hunting to new brunswick twice, took his '12 a couple times before that. Those trucks ran as quiet as gas engines, had power to spare, and got 20 mpg.

iv'e had lots of experience with powerstrokes on the repair end of things. there's no end to the $ you can put into one of those things if you get a bad one or just get a bad batch of fuel. mebey the chevy and dodges are just as bad, not much experience with repairs on either.

I can tell a Cummins without seeing it, those things are noisy.

Id like to know why the chevy gas tanks are so small? Looked at the ford web site, you can get a 48 gallon gas tank in a long bed ford, now thats the kind of tank a big truck like that needs, not the 36 gallon one that the Chevys top out at.

If Chevy made a K2500HD with a 6.2 and 48 gallon tank, Id have one already.

I never got anywhere near 20 mpg.I'm not saying it can't be done but mine never did.I eventually bought a programmer and just put a tow program in it.It was supposed to give me another 40 hp and increase fuel mileage by 2-3 mpg.It definitely gave it more power but I never noticed a difference in fuel mileage.Mine started fine during normal periods of cold but it had to be plugged in when temps fropped to around single digits.The duramax/Allison combo is a great fit if you tow a lot.It's just a matter of how much you tow to make it a worthwhile investment.
