My father in Law got bit on Saturday...

He's been having trouble with the Thunderheads shooting right out of his Excal. Vortex. He tried Muzzy's, and they weren't great either, so he finally got some Excal. broadheads.

He was going to go out for does on Saturday, so he wanted to be sure it was working.

He shot it numerous times at 20, 30, etc. DEAD ON.

Well on the last day of regular archery, he had a beautiful buck at 45 yards. He'd never really shot that far, so he didn't take the shot. He wanted to see if he was accurate at that distance, so he took one last shot, this time at 45 yards.

It was cold, and he was having a difficult time keeping the bow steady, so he kept moving his fingers around. When he shot, it happened.

He waited until Sunday to get checked out, and found that his thumb was broken clean through between the knuckle and the tip. Stitches to hold down his nail, but they are concerned that he may have damaged the nail bed...might lose the nail for good.

Went to a specialist today, and they are not happy with how the bones are separating, and they may have to put a rod through the tip of the thumb, down to the base, to keep the bones together.

I've told him that he is lucky that he still has the thumb, and that it is his right hand (he's left handed), but obviously, right now, he is not happy at all.

BE CAREFUL GUYS...He's shot that thing for 5 years, and never had this happen.

Always a good reminder. Somewhere I read that a crossbow is the equivalent to holding a loaded bear trap.

I have an Excalibur Vortex and was lucky I only nicked my thumb in July. It only took a mill a second to realize after I shot to realize that my thumb was above the rail. I tore half my thumb nail off, which I consider lucky. I see Excalibur is now putting a ridge on their fore-ends to keep your thumb below the rail.
