Thanks to everyone who will be involved with huntingpa.com's first annual Traveling Decoy. This will be a lot of fun to watch as the season unfolds. Also, a big thank you to Tim Stewart (susquegander) for carving the decoy for us all to use!!!

Everyone involved, please remember to take pics & post them here w/a write-up of your hunts. Jon

Stewie made his first appearance of the season. Saturday 9-18-2010. He went on the Youth hunt with a great group of kids. The first duck taken over Stewie was a hen Shoveler. Stewie ended the day with 2 Shovelers, 1 Mallard, 1 Wood duck and 1 Coot. The first pic is Stewie at the restaurant before the hunt(he doesn't eat much). The rest are during the hunt. Thanks to everyone involved.

Ok here we go , Stewie got to go on his first hunt with the kids on youth day, there were 5 birds killed over him, 2 shovlers, a woodie a mallard and a coot , the kids i had shot over 80 shots the first 2 hours did alot of missing but had a great day they learn to hit them soon, the birds were really flying good the first 2 hours and Stewie did his job, it was great to tell all the kids about Stewie before the hunt and about the travels he is going to make, they really liked that and thought it was cool, they had a great day a took care of him putting him out and boxing him back up after the hunt, just the smiles on there faces made the whole season for me and a big thank you to Skube for taking all the pics and helping out.Stewie's first hunt was at westfairview pa.

october duck opener

THE BACKGROUND TO: Stewey’s Duck Adventure Continues.
he gets filmed by http://www.thetunneloutdoors.com for a spot on the sportsman channel....
and STEWEY DRAWS HIMSELF IN A MATE!!

SEE LAST PIC LOL!
We hunted all day in 2 places!
52 degrees @ ramp @ 4.00 am, river level 6.2 feet. Sunny n clear no wind,high 78.

The week prior to the 9th , with all that rain, ducks were pretty scattered, Danny had seen good numbers trading in the air near another huntpa members blind!
This guy had already told Danny he would be hunting his 2ND blind, and Danny being the sportsman he is, called the guy the thursday before and asked him and made sure he was hunting blind 2! He said yeah, and Danny then told him we were going to set up down from his first blind and try n work passing birds!
1/2 hour later guy calls n tells Dan he’s hunting blind 1 now????
Well, we weren’t looking for a pissing match with it being the opener, them being FRIENDS and all, and with us having 2 youth hunters, we wanted a great time for Saturday!
So, we sat up near my place Friday am and seen decent birds there, but with the usual crowds there and all we wanted and hoped to get a little room to work birds as we had along with us troy, owner of THETUNNELOUTDOORS.com, A young production company trying to break into the filming of waterfowl and especially showcasing pa.
When I told Troy about the Huntpa-Stewey The Traveling Decoy thing, he loved it, and wanted to plug that into the show! So I talked with susquegander and jguns2002 to make sure they were ok with it, if it (the hunt) were to even make the show and get a little background on the carver himself!

Big thanks to Tim Stewart and Jon Wright for being ok with it!
We then scouted a new area Friday pm and stumbled across this honey hole, almost all greenheads with a couple blacks n gadwalls

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KE9dsWRRDQ

But, there was a poster with a name and a number there! We again, being true sportsmen, wanted to do this right even though it was a public spot.
Danny called him talked with the guy not once, but twice, to make sure we wouldn’t run into him out in the dark, and he was very nice and ok with it!
Thanks Mr. Wilt (not Jason wilt)!
Next day we set up a couple boat hides to try n get 7 guys and a dog out of the water!
Set some decoys and my motor locks up with 15 min to LST, uh oh! worked on it at 9.00 and got here working again!
Had out about 50 mallard, widgeon, woody, gadwalls n teal, and OF COURSE STEWEY RIGHT IN THE HOLE!

Troy also had wanted to highlight the upcoming hunter force with 2 youths there this day! The blind seats were occupied by Myself, my son Daniel, Blindspot, 5bh2ofowl(Danny), Troy and Drake of Tunnel Outdoors and Drakes son Brandon and their German shorthair Berretta!
Odd thing happened when danny went to get the film crew at the ramp at 5.30,the COPS, PGC and the PFBC were all there and they checked EVERYTHING!
Hunting liscense, boat and car reg., Drivers Liscenses Ect!, All was good!

As usual the gunfire started 12 minutes early but we got to take our shot and tried to pick everything inside 35 yards, passing or decoying, and we got both! Some great action of the gadwall and a few of the mallards and a woody was great, in yer face stuff!
All in all we got 9 that morning, but only missed just a few more, so the numbers reflect what the hunting pressure of opening day does to birds cause if u remember the video of the scout, aside from the 70 that took out of the hole u can see clearly, there were 50-60 more swimming away downstream at the same time, but only 25 birds made it back by 10.00 am!
Packed it in, hit subs for lunch.......

CONTINUED BELOW PICS,

......at lunch, I got word a friends and fellow huntpa members blind got vandalized the night before( I seen it was fine on Friday am)!
Got me thinking, I jet to my blind and sure enough, destroyed the night before (was in it 8.00 am friday! They took a chainsaw to mine, now what do I do with 5 guys and a dog left hunting the afternoon!
Called a friend, also a fellow huntpa member and true sportsman as well, told him my plight, he said, sure use my blind! thamks bud!!

I’m truly sorry, but I cant show any pictures of afternoon hunt except me n Danny afterwards to protect my friends spot, stewey was there!
All in all the day went well, had a great time with some new people and my son Daniel and bro in law and especially Dan(5bh20fowl),this is the kind of guy waterfowling needs out there! Thanks Danny!!
Hunting over a German shorthair was quite an eye opener, FINE DOG BERETTA, THE CURRENT WAS RIPPING!

Well folks it finally happened...Stewie got skunked!

It wasn't from lack of trying but rather from the wrong game showing up to check him out and then we both missed on the only duck to commit to the spread.

I recently had surgery so I knew my time with Stewie would be limited, so when the doc said I could go out for "short periods" starting Thursday I though about taking
Stewie on his first flintlock deer hunt in an orchard a friend owns. It would be a short walk in and I would sit along a stone wall over looking part of the orchard and see what showed up.

Well I walked in and sat Stewie in an apple tree and took my place. Nothing showed up for a while, so when it started to get closer to end of legal light I started to walk over to the tree with Stewie in it. As I approached the tree a nice 6 point buck walked around the end of the row of apple trees. Well it's doe only for early muzzie season so I watched him for a while and then he walked off and hopped the stone wall to the next field. I packed up Stewie and we walked out to my car. About 40 yards from my car, out walked a huge bodied 10 pointer! Again I had to watch him go......moral of the story....Stewie works great for deer, he just has to learn the PGC rules for early season!!

Saturday morning came early at about 4 am and my son and I packed up Stewie and headed off for the last day of the north region duck/start of goose. We arrived at the launch around 445 after stopping for the required coffee fill up. Forgot the camera in the truck but Stewie went in for coffee and the overnight staff thought it was neat that Stewie was traveling around the state hunting.

Got setup way before dawn and settled in for coffee and attempted to stay warm in the 30 degree air in the marsh. Yesterday was windy and it rained but then the clouds broke last night and the temp dropped like a rock. It got cold so quick we found a dragon fly frozen to the marsh grass this morning.

About 10 minutes after legal light we had a lone hen mallard fly high over us and she wanted nothing to do with coming to the spread or call. A little while later we had another lone mallard come in and this one decided to drop in, two misplaced shots later, the same mallard flew away minus a few tail feathers.

Over the next 3 hours we saw 5 more mallards and a small group of 4 teal but none would commit to the spread. I think part of the problem yesterday was the constant sounds of shots from the opening of small game, as well as, muzzleloader deer and junior deer season. The teal would circle back to the call but wouldn't commit because of the sounds of shots in the vicinity.

Here are some pics from the hunt. Again, it's all about the sunrise, especially after what I recently went through with surgery.

Hope Stewie has fun during the rest of the season...and take him deer hunting if you have him during the season...he works great for bucks! One more thing, when your doctor says not to overdo it...listen. I did yesterday and today I feel like I got hit by a truck.

Stewie Visits New Jersey

The morning started off early for me and Stewie ,,The alarm went off @ 12:30 am got up and got stuff together and loaded the truck.. Me and Stewie hit the road about 1:50 am to meet Matt (bellyup) and Noah at the turnpike....

We got to the Launch around 5:30am loaded the gear in the boat and got the boat in the water and headed out into the marsh..It was low tide and the air was chilly...

We got to the spot about 6:15 and achored the boat in place and set out the dekes With Teal on left side and Mallards and blacks or right side ....
We had some teal land in dekes before shooting time ,So that looked pretty promising , Shooting time hit there were teal everywhere balls of Teal from 30 to 50 birds at a shot,,Had a few come in but my shooting wasn't stellar cuz i wiffed and Noah backed me up and connected on the only Teal taken...
We seen a buch of birds and now i cain't wait for the late season to get here!!!!!

So we didn't get skunked with stewie

And as far as The travaling decoy goes if this happens next season i would like to have it again in the same date (Oct 30) My Dads Birthday (past)

Stewie Ready to get out there and go to work

Got to love the sunrise in the Marsh

The Teal dekes

I haven't been on this forum in a LONG time, but this is an awesome thing you have going on here. As such, I would like to invite Stewie on his first western hunt. If it could be worked out, Stewie would be the honored guest on a Colorado duck hunt, a Colorado Goose hunt, and finally a Wyoming antelope hunt. If the 'responsible party' for Stewie could contact me via e-mail ([email protected])we could get something set up. In the meantime...shoot straight!

11-6-2010

the morning started off early as usual with a decent forecast we had high hopes of a good opener... so with an adventure ahead of us i set the gps left stewie in charge and went from there....

at 3 am we were on the road and stewie was in charge of navigation, we hit a few minor detours and a couple wrong turns...but what do you expect from a block of wood!?

once we got far enough north we were greeted by about an inch of snow on the roads trees and grass. it was refreshing and nice to know i wont be sweating today. arriving a bit late due to poor navigation we finally get to our spot get setup and have about a minute before the action starts...

it was a great opener and stewie had a great day as well as we did. light snow fall and lots of birds. laughed all day ate some good food and cant beat hanging out with my best buddy!
(this ones for you labandbirdman)

it was relaxing and nice to kick back and watch all the action and take in the beautiful day...

stewie esp. enjoyed the show as he was in the front row! boy does he ride the water nice tim!

after changing the spread a bit we were back in action...

we managed to pull a few birds and stewie continues to bring some luck... we managed a rare web tagged mallard today. pretty lucky trophy for the day and another notch in stewies belt! also the band is upside down, dont see that too often.

cant wait to get him back out and see what else he can bring us!!
