I bought a Model A Savage 170 pump in .30 cal. I wanted to mount a scope on top as it has holes for the receiver already tapped. I bought, supposedly, the correct bases for this model (breech is rounded on top). However, only three of the four holes line up with the bases and breech. Since I have some taps, can I safely tap the fourth hole?

I would just get the right bases and be done with it. No sense in putting more holes in a perfectly good rifle.

Digging through the internet, I have found that Weaver Model 62 bases are supposed to fit the 170, but I need to know if the base is rounded or flat. I need a rounded base.

To be honest for the $ it costs for the base I'd just get one and try it out....they're super cheap at under $10. Near as I can tell it's the same base as is used on a Remington 760....which is also rounded.

An old catalog I have, shows the same base for the M760 Rem fitting the M170 Savage, but that's a one piece Weaver base.

As both actions have rounded tops, one might assume all bases for them would fit rounded receivers?

If the holes don't align properly with your two piece bases, it's likely because the holes were spaced differently than was standard...or you have the wrong ones? Not even sure if the M170 was even factory drilled/tapped? But since they were made between 1970 and 1981, they probably were.

I just measured the hole pattern on a Leupold base for a 760 Remington. Rear holes are approx. .609 between centers. Front holes are approx .856 between centers. If your Savage has this spacing, I may have some bases for it.

The Rem mod 760 bases are a perfect fit. I bought a model 170 off a guy at work. Still had half of the first box of shells he bought. I purchased the 760 bases at sportsmans warehouse when they were open on Mt. Nebo Rd. Nice little gun, reports of jamming when cycling the action fast however. Good luck.
