I have a savage 170 in 30-30. How much would accuracy suffer if I shortened the barrel about 4 inches? I'd like to make it into a brush gun.

i have a marlin 336sdt with a factory 16.5" barrel and i don't notice any difference between it and a 20 inch barrel. they made the 170 in the carbine model with a 18.5" barrel so i think it would be fine. it would be a great setup.

Properly cut/crowned, it shouldn't affect accuracy at all. Might even improve it? Velocity will be somewhat less, but not much of a loss in performance.

What Denny said. And I'll bet it shoots a bit better with a new crown if properly done by a good 'smith.

I agree, and since it's going to be used as a brush gun losing velocity will not matter much!
