WASHINGTON — Could Sen. Pat Toomey be the Democrats' chance to get gun control legislation passed?

Reports circulated Friday afternoon that the Pennsylvania Republican is in talks with West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin on a bill to expand background checks on gun sales, which is considered the one piece of the Democrats' guns agenda with a chance of becoming law.

"Manchin-Toomey negotiations, if successful, could provide a breakthrough on a key issue facing the White House and Senate Democrats," insider DC-publication Politico first reported.

With talks slowed, the goal of gun control advocates is to find support from a conservative Republican like Toomey to give political cover to GOP lawmakers who represent areas like suburban Philadelphia, where gun laws play better among constituents. In theory, those lawmakers can tell detractors Toomey's for it.

I called his office yesterday t... He must have been busy ...some girl answered... I gave her the message.

Just got a voice mail thingy from Casey's office... I guess even the Dems don't want to talk to Casey so they'll talk to Toomey

Toomey better not sell out the hunters and gun owners of our state. If he does, he will definitely lose his next election. Too bad it's still 3 years away so he might think we will forget. I won't.

We are stuck with Casey the gun grabber until 2018 so we definitely need someone to offset him.

Here is the text of the email I sent to Senator Toomey.

I have gotten emails and have heard Rumors that Senator Toomey is being pressured by the worst liberal in the Senate, Chuck Shumer, and will go along with Shumer and Feinstein's gun grabbing agenda. I hope this isn't true. Sen. Toomey was elected by the conservative gun owners and hunters of Pennsylvania to represent us in Washington DC and has an obligation to the people of PA to keep the feds in check and out of our lives.

Please, Sen. Toomey, do your part to defend the Constitution you swore to uphold.

I sent Toomey an E-mail Thursday This was my second E-mail I sent to him. I told him if he can't stand up for our Rights to bear arms and that we don't need anymore gun laws. If he does sell us out, then he will not get my vote. I might as well vote for a DEM!

It doesn't surprise me at all. Let's just make sure that WE don't let the scumbag further his career on our dime.

Ok, but that takes planing and implementation now.

You need someone to challenge him in the primary. That person needs support and funding - lots of funding.

If that person wins the primary, they then need to be well organized and very well funded for the general election.

In all that, while we look at gun rights, others will have other more Unitarian concerns and demands for this person.

it is the complete package that is in play with any challenger. No one is going to win this state or any other on a single issue.

There is a reason the old guard in the senate continue to win. All the reasons above. Add that the challenger also refrains from speaking and damaging himself and the rest of the party. We have a democratic senate overwhelmingly due to a handful of people running for a senate seat that with a few words took the R win and likely control away with a few short sentences.

The possibility that after weeks of stalled negotiations senators might be on the cusp of a breakthrough comes as President Obama and his top surrogates will begin on Monday their most aggressive push yet to rally Americans around his gun-control agenda........

But in a move that could draw other Republicans as well as Democrats from conservative states who have not yet backed Obama’s agenda, Sen. Joe Manchin III (W.Va.), a key Democratic broker, has spent the past few days crafting the framework of a possible deal with Sen. Patrick J. Toomey (R-Pa.).

Manchin and Toomey are developing a measure to require background checks for all gun purchases except sales between close family members and some hunters, which addresses concerns of some conservatives, according to the aides,..........

Toomey is usually a reliable conservative vote for Senate Republicans, but he faces reelection in a Democratic-leaning state in 2016. A new player in the months-long gun talks, he is one of several GOP senators who have said that they would be receptive to supporting an expanded background-check program if a bipartisan deal were to emerge. As a former House lawmaker, Toomey remains close to House Republicans who represent the suburbs of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, some of whom have said that they are open to striking bipartisan compromises on gun legislation in part because support for new gun laws is strong in those areas of the state........

Talks between Manchin and Toomey began in earnest Wednesday, and the two have swapped proposed drafts, aides said. Any formal announcement of a deal won’t come until Tuesday or Wednesday, when the men return to Washington and sort out remaining details in person, aides said......

pa has background checks on all handgun transfers with exemptions for parent to child, grandparent to grandchild, and spouses. rifles and shotguns backgrounds are done via ffl dealers on new and used. gun shows ffl dealers do background checks. private sales of long guns are exempt such as neighbors, friends, ads, yard sales, auctions.

Toomey has advertised himself as a politician with the desire to reduce gun regulations. We have to hold him to it.

This dosen't sound good for Toomey, it appears he's caving in, but I'll wait to see what the proposal is before I call for the tar and feathers.

He's gonna sell us out,you have to do the math on the votes, There are 12 million people in PA, X .40 percent people out of that 12 mil are registered to vote, leaving 4,8 million voters. there are 900,000 thousand hunters and I'm guessing 300,000 thousand other gun owners, and IF each and every one of those 1.2 million "GUNNERS" votes , SUBTRACTED FROM THE 4.8 MILLION, leaves 3.6 million "non- gunners" to vote against us, and this all assumes on the fact that everyone registered to votes, does vote. And every" gunner" votes the "gun" way. And that all that are registered to vote, actually votes that day. We're still 2.4 million votes down. He is going to need some DEMO votes this time around for re-election, and he's not going to risk losing any immigrant votes from Philly and Pittsburgh, especially after the repubs are working harder this time around for the immigrant vote. SO, "GUNNERS", WERE GETTING SOLD OUT for the immigrant vote, and the minority votes, that's why he's leaning the way he is. Even the immigrant vote probably outdoes "our gunner" votes. Just thinking aloud !

I'll side with Toomey on this as so far he's been 100% pro-gun in my mind. I email him constantly, and his responses are the exact opposite of Casey's. Until I see otherwise....

I will still email him constantly - it's the only way our Rep's can know what we think. Most of the time wasted complaining on the net should be spent researching and writing emails to Rep's.

Here's my message :

Dear senator.

I'm going to keep this short. I see in the news today that you are working with democrats behind closed doors regarding gun control, namely universal background checks.

This whole thing started with Newtown, and the president to this day still uses people from that event as live props. Any and all of proposed legislation would not have stopped newtown, or any of the other high profile shootings that have taken place over the last 5 years. The background check issue will have no effect on school safety or preventing criminals from getting a gun. Go ask any criminal how many background checks they have had....NONE. If the goal is school safety, having someone fill out some paperwork at time of a gun purchase won't stop a crazy like James Holmes or Adam Lanza.

I have had many PICS checks at time of purchase of a firearm and will continue to do so. This idea that the majority or even many of gun purchasers don't have checks done at time of purchase is false. These rules only apply to LAW ABIDING CITIZENS. You can pass all the laws you want. They won't apply to criminals.

Most notably, virtually all of criminals that use guns in robberies, homicides, etc got the gun illegally so a BRC would have had NO impact on preventing these crimes.

Enforce existing laws, and tell the president to stop using high profile shootings as a "golden goose" of an opportunity to spread his socialist addenda. In this case, it's eventual disarming of the citizens.

Please don't think that by holding hands with Harry Reid and the rest of the senate democrats make you more electable. It does just the opposite. Some call it "bi-partisanship". I call it giving away your principals. Don't be that guy, please.

Thank you for your time.

Well written WyCo!! I called Toomey and Casey twice since Friday and wrote to them both too, also emailed Toomey refarding supporting Rand Paul's anti-gun filibuster. If 40 senators support it, the anti-gun bills would be DOA!!

We have to hope the Republican controlled house votes this crap down.

I will do all I can to make Toomey a one term Senator if he sells us all out to the feds.
