well looks like i need to replace upper and lower ball joints and the tie rod end on my dodge dakata 4x4. 400 at sears but since they just tried allignment they will re allign after that for free. but seeing how i can get the parts for myself for half of what they are charging is there anyone in the pittsburgh area that could show me the ropes of doing this on my own. from what ive gathered i would need a joint seperater clamp and maybe a air chisel to bust the rivets out after drilling the heads off. If i can buy the stuff and learn how to do it myself i would be better off in the long run but should i just bite the bullet and get it done for me. any garages that do this at a better price, although it will need alligned when done and thats another 90 unless sears will do it free even if i do the work myself. im sure the other side will go soon even tho its solid right now

Take it to Sears and get it done so you get your alignment set for free..You can get a grinder at Sears next time to grind the rivets off...You will need 2 jacks,a joint breaker U bar..And a metric socket to break the nut on the CV joint..Once you learn to do them yourself it gets easy to do..When you unthread the tie rod be sure to count the turns so you can get the new one half lined up to get it to an alignment shop...I do not own any dodges but most light trucks have CV joints on the front if it is 4X4...ALSO ALWAYS be on the lookout for a retired older mechanic who works out of his home and does work cheap...It will save you thousands in the long run...You can start purchasing the tools now so when your other side goes bad you will have all your new tools ready..

Done a ton of them and best advice if you've never tackled this type of repair...save yourself a lot of headache and pay to get it done at a shop. Yep, it can be done at home with the right tools and especially if someone with experience can lend a helping hand. But...if you get started and run into any issues after the truck is disabled, then you've got a real problem. Good Luck whichever way you go.

x2 I have done these on my old Dakota a couple of times over the years. If you don't know what you are doing have someone else do it for you.

thats why im asking if anyone would help me out...so i can learn. maybe sears will let me sit in and watch

Check on youtube. They have quite a few videos on doing things. Learned a few tricks when I replaced the heater core in my Jimmy..

I've got the balljoint press kit to help with installion on all models of 4wd trucks and it makes the job much easier. You might be able to rent one from an auto parts store.

im gonna get my parts from advance auto online order is 20% off and go back to the mountains in sc pa and a mech is gonna help me. he said for $400 bucks he would cut my truck in 2..now i dont need that but better than sears when they missed the problem the first 2 times

Yeah i dunno kinda depends on how handy you are. It can be down and it is not terribly difficult, but sometimes it can be a pain.

well thats done. sob of a job i tell ya. i never would have got them off myself with what tools i have. The lower joint had to be heated with a torch and the [censored] ball shot out like a cannon. somehow it missed all 4 of us and the truck. charged 140, the parts were 140 for upper and lower and a tierod end.. had to replace the brake caliper while i was in there..just replaced it last year. gotta check on the warrenty there
