Hi, a friend of mine is selling me a Rem. model 600 in .243. I'm not familiar with this model,but i do like the guns look and general weight and size[carbine].If anyone has some info to share about this model Rem,i'd love to hear from you.

Very good guns. Light ,accurate, and handy. They were the Model 7 long before the model 7. I have a friend who could hunt with any gun ever made, but he shoots his buck every year with his 600 in .308. The only one thats no fun to shoot is the 600 in .350 Rem Mag. That is one of the nastiest recoiling jaw busters any outfit ever made ! Its a good gun, you will like it. I beleive they started making those in 1964 or so.
the 600 came in 2 flavors. the original from 64-68 was a 18" carbine with a plastic ventilated rib and walnut stock and short action with a dogleg bolt. came in 222, 223, 243, 6mm 35 rem and 308. the 600 magnum was the same but came with a laminated beech/walnut stock and came in 350 rem mag and 6.5 rem mag. in the 70's they came out with a 600 mohawk that was pretty much the same but no vent rib and either walnut or hardwood stock. not sure of the cals but i know 222, 243, 6mm and 308 at least.
i have a '65 350 mag and can attest to the jawsmacking recoil. it is not a very pleasant gun to shoot and if you don't get a good cheek weld it will knock you a good one. but, it is big deer medicine. the deer that have walked in front of my 350 did not take another step.
a 600 in 243 would be a really nice little giun. good for kids, women or even 250 lb men. i want to get one in 243 one of these days.

I own 3 Model 600's. .243 Mohawk, .308, and .350 Mag. I am not sure about the safeties but I can say they are very light, maneuverable and accurate rifles. IMO, the .308 kicks harder than the .350Mag I think because the Mag has a recoil pad and the regular model in .308 does not.

The Rem. 600 does have the Walker trigger that - if not properly adjusted - can go bang when closing the bolt or taking the safety off. I put a Timney trigger in my .222.

there was a couple of recalls for the 600. look at the left side of the trigger and see if there is a V. if so, the infamous trigger recall that was killing people was done. they also will fix the safety so that you can open the bolt with the safety on. i had gander do mine years ago and i think it cost $15 because remington paid for the labor or parts or something.
I had one in .308 that was a great shooter I free floated the barrel and glass bedded the action. Regret selling it. Bought by a fellow HPA member I think he still has it, good guy fair price. The recall had a group of SNs that were affected the one I had, purchased new did NOT require return to factory if I rember right

I have the Mohawk in 243 cal. excellent rifle light weight
mine is a bummer not fun to shoot just keeps putting bullets in the same hole at the range
I will say with the Barnes TSX 85 grain it will stop any whitetail

hoot, the 600 in the 243 is a nice rifle but it sure is a noisy rascal. a buddy of mine has one and it sure cracks when fired. also there is a trick to taking the bolt out of it. the release is not the same as the 700s. its located down along side of the bolt on the right side if im not mistaken.

I have a question why number 3 has no factory studs for a swivel attachment for a rifle sling?
I have the same stock on my Mohawk 600 dark in color yet no studs for a sling
did they come that way from the factory?

I have a Rem. 600 Mowhawk 6mm I was given as a kid. I have shot a bunch of bucks with it over the years. Great shooting gun.
