Reduced 45-70 loads

Never having ventured into reduced load world for the '70, I've been reading Unique and SR4759 are good powders to use. I have both Unique and 4759 on hand. Some say use fillers while others say absolutely not.

The reason? My grandson wants to shoot "Thumper" so I want to toss together a "Go Poof" load using the Sierra 300s I have on hand.

Thoughts?

Use 5744..requires no filler and works the best in BP cartridges for reduced loads....
I don't have any 5744 at the moment so I'll have to check at the toy shop.

BTW, what does ya recommend charge wise?

Start at 28 to a max of 31 gr.. Standard LR primer....load data is out of the Accurate loading manual for Trapdoor Springfields, BTW....

Make sure the grandson does the shooting....

LR primer and I believe 12gr. I will have to double check. I loaded up a ton of them and haven't loaded them in a while. This was with 340 and 405 grain cast bullets.

I loaded 10 rounds with 12.0 Unique. Almost everything I could find suggested 11-13 grains so I split the difference. Hopefully Thursday or Friday I'll get to try them out then load 20 so the grandson can blow them up this weekend. As soon as I can locate some 5744 I want to give it a try too.

Thanks again!
