Ive been a loyal dodge/Ram truck guy for a while, and this past year purchased a new ram with the rotary shift knob. I wasnt real thrilled they went to a knob to begin with, and really not liking it now unless im doing something wrong. I have a steep and windy hill going into camp that usually gets very icy, so on my other trucks i would put in 4 low and my automatic trans in 1st gear and it would creep down hill. On the new ram i put in 4 low and use the steering wheel gear down selector to put in 1st and the truck feels like its running down the hill no holdback at all even in 4 low just picks up rpms and speed. Talked to the dealer who also didnt know anything about gearing the truck lol. Ive seen sites where they say those buttons for gearing down are more less a toy. I hope im just doing something wrong cause thats not good if you cant gear down a truck may have to change brands if theyre going to continue that way. Cause trying to use alot of breaks on ice doesent work well even with chains. Any insight would be appriciated

Heck, I hated when trucks went to a switch for 4WD. I prefer a manual shifter. Honestly, I don't know how that would work and I'd be leery about buying a truck so equipped based on your story.

Laurel, do you have cruise control? if you do when you hit the speed you want push the set speed button, that should hold you back. The only experience I have is on the road ways, not ice but if I have my cruise control set for 65 and I am going down a steep hill I stay pretty much at 65 mph. I would think it would work the same way if you hit set at 5 or 10 mph

Love the idea of a rotary shifter as it eliminate the need for those large center consoles which eat up leg room. Can't find a car without large console which intrude on leg room.
Don't like the electronic shift for the transfer case as there is about a 3 second delay and when needed on road conditions that is too long
My truck has a column mounted shifter but only has a selection for Drive with an button to manually shift up and down. I can go low range 1st gear but doesn't hold back like old trucks. I can do better if I hit the tow/haul button which also helps hold back.
Too much of todays 1/2 ton trucks are built to impress the soocer mom that wants to look like a cowgirl but doesn't want to live without the luxury.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, yes i also agree i miss the old "pull" in 4wd systems, as im not a big fan of electronics. I will say this 8 speed auto does get better mileage then my old trucks though, just not a fan i cant get it to hold in low range creeping down a hill. Ill have to try the tow/haul and see if that helps. I did see something about a hill descent control that is sold in the higher priced heavier duties like the powerwagons maybe thats the only way Ram offers it now that still kind of stinks 😫 to bad there making trucks like cars now.

I have 2016 Ram and have used the gear shift down button on the steering wheel several times to downshift to a lower gear while descending a mountain road without any problems.

That same thing is massively multiplied with SUVs. Most are glorified station wagons today.

The wife had a 2016 1500 Ram with the Eco Diesel. When towing her horse trailer or boat I would use the manual down shift button. It did work well for slowing the vehicle. Just like the old L1,and L2 when you could use the gear shift leaver.
