Alaskan moose are very large so the more gun the better. Maine/Ont-Que moose are not as large but inhabit some pretty thivk habitatand can run inot some really thivk stuff while bleeding out.

I'd say use a gun that shoots the largest bullet that you can accurately handle. The 338, 348, 35 Whelen, 444 are good. 45-70, 450 M very good. 416s work wonders.

Not saying the 300 mags are not up to it; they will kill moose (so will the 308); but you asked "good" choices not adequate.

When I was hunting moose in Quebec/Ontario the three most popular cartridges with the residents seemed to be the .303 British, .30/30 and .308....we killed them with anything from the .270 up to the .338....

No one had any complaints with them.....

Don't shoot them in or near water....no matter what you're using....

When I was in Quebec was told majority of locals used a .270. I carried my .300 Win but did not get to shoot at any. I would say use something from .270 up and learn to shoot accurately.

Shots in NE usually are close, so the big heavy slow bullet is going to be the best for a given recoil range. I should have added the 358 win to that earlier list.

On moose you really need to anchor it fast. Every 20 seconds can be another touogh 200 yards of packing out meal. I use the 416 Remington.

I would use the .338 or a .375 but I like big guns. I bought a .375 last year because I want to go on a moose hunt sometime in the future, hopefully I will get lucky enough to draw a tag sometime.

What is the most common 338? Also what is the cheapest 338 cartridge?

You still have that scar above your eye from that cannon?
