Hey everyone,

I am setting up on water that has divers, puddlers, and geese and I have never set up for all 3 together. We either set out both mallards and buffies/bluebills or mallards with goose floaters. I was wondering has anyone killed divers in a goose spread or how can we set-up for all three. I can't say that I have seen divers hang out with geese but wasn't sure. Any input on how to set the dekes or if it is worth trying please chime in. Thanks!

I would think you could set mallard decoys close to the bank or blind a small group down wind from the blind a little pile in front of the blind about 15-20 yards out your goose spread and right outside of that by 10 yards and up wind set some buffie decoys I have never done it but I have been told this is kinda a middle of the road setup for all.

Here's my .02.. Not that I've had success doing it, but IMO it can be over complicated.. It's not uncommon to see mallards and geese mixed, so I would have them somewhat together, although have the geese downwind of the mallards.. geese won't tend to land over ducks so if you're going to try to get them to dump in give the geese a clear shot.. I'd put the divers out about 30 yards in front of you since they'll probably be buzzing by.. Like I said I haven't had much success or experience with a spread like this, just going off what I see naturally.. This is kinda for an open water setup.. If you're hunting the shore just have the mallards / geese in along the shore and the divers 30 yds off?

Ducks love geese! You can set the mallard decoys close to the geese. Even mix a few in the with geese. I'd keep the diver decoys seperate in their own pod though.

Well thanks to everyone for your responses. We were out this am and saw zero geese, a handful of divers and a bunch of malllards and blacks but they really didn't want to play. The divers landed just out of range and floated down river, a group of buffleheads and the mallards stayed just out of range. We had a group of guys come in after 6 am and set-up 100 yards away which didn't help. They didn't get any shooting either so not sure what is going on. The spread looked good, may have been pressured birds but who knows! Thanks again for the info fellas.

I usually put my mallards/blacks upwind of wherever I'm hunting; usually 5-10yds from the bank. I'll put some divers approx. 30yds from shore on the downwind side. My geese will be 70-80yds upwind.

It depends on what the birds are doing, just watch them.I have had great success setting geese in one area, ducks in another and divers in another. Use family groups, depending on how big the flocks are.
