persimmons

Has anyone planted persimmon trees? I just planted 4 yesterday and was wondering how they grow here in Pa.

Re: persimmons

I bought seeds from someone on this site and none of them grew. I can tell you when I lived in Oklahoma the persimmon trees were deer magnets.

Re: persimmons

my buddy in the hills of southeastern Ohio has a lot in the wetter areas of his land. and they draw deer down there also.
Re: persimmons

I've wondered the same thing. I know in the south the are wildlife magnets. I'm guessing there is a reason you don't see any here in NE PA. Hopefully someone will have some encouraging news.
Re: persimmons

persimmons should be fall planted as the seeds need to go thru about 3 months of cold stratification. Have also found that seeds from some cultivars available in catalogues are not viable.
Re: persimmons

There was an article a few years back in the QDMA magazine about persimmons. After reading it, I'd stick with apples or pears. Seems so many of them don't bear fruit, plus, we're on the northern edge of their range, which makes it tough to grow them.
Re: persimmons

I have some american meader persimmonn planted here in northern luzerne co. they are growing well and have been producing fruit the past 2 years. they have been in the ground going on 4 years. i do like that they don't leaf out and bloom until late this month {avoiding the frost and freezes we get late here] last year my apple trees were fruitless because of the freeze but my persimmons where loaded.
Re: persimmons

Thanks Red Rock. Thats the encouragement I've been looking for. Please keep us posted. Where did you buy yours from?
Re: persimmons

Got my tree as a "Runner" off the main root line.Doing fine after 3yrs and is about 5-6'.
Re: persimmons

Planted 30 about a month ago in Lanco. All were from Ed Fort Nusery. 4-6 feet tall beautiful stock they sent. It's important to make sure you get males and females together if you want fruit. These were the first persimmons I've planted but I was told that spring plant only north of I80 since the growing season is so much shorter.
Re: persimmons

i got them either from musser forest in pa or burnt ridge nursery in washington state, can't remember. my trees are just statrting to leaf out now.
Re: persimmons

I also bought some of those seeds from a member here and planted them outdoors in early Nov. some directly in the ground and some in containers. Just this week two that were planted in containers sprouted, and seem to be growing.I still have hope for the ones planted directly in the ground.
I did read that persimmon seeds need at least 3 months of below 40 degrees before they will grow. Some say putting the seeds in the frig in a plastic bag for this length of time will work, then plant in the spring?????
Re: persimmons

I germinated about 12 of them last year. we stratified them by keeping them in the refridgerator for the winter, then in the spring planted them. For 2 weeks, not a single one sprouted. so we tried scarifying them a little and put little cracks in the shell with a pair of pliars. within days all of them had sprouted. Have about 31 right now i'm in process of getting to grow.
Re: persimmons

Never seen a persimmon tree in PA. There are lots in IN. My mom would make rolls and pudding. Would love to have some of that again. Yes the deer love them.
