PA 2011 Deer Season first week report Zone 2G Tioga Co. Gaines Twp. South of Rt. 6
9 guys in camp, 8 guys out hunting. one fell and was hurt bad.

Friday and Saturday night spotting. 1 - 8 pt and 1 spike and maybe 10 to 12 does.
Sunday afternoon 4 does seen

Monday hunted dark to dark No Bucks seen, maybe 6 to 8 does seen combined, by all eight of us
No close-by shots heard. Maybe 10 to 12 distant shots heard

Tuesday dark to 2pm “Heavy Rain” No Bucks seen
8 doe seen combined, by all eight of us
No close-by shots heard. Maybe 6 to 8 distant shots heard

Wednesday dark to dark No Bucks seen, maybe 8 to 10 does seen. combined, by all eight of us.
1 close-by shot heard. About 3/4 miles away Maybe 4 distant shots heard.

Now comes the weird part. Starting at 2 am on Thursday morning we are all woke up by shots being fired on the mountain above the camp. We could see lights being shined along either the new pipeline or on the snowmobile trail. Now picture this, the valley we hunt runs north and south for about a mile and a half, and is probably a half mile wide. The shooting went on about every ten minutes or so until about 6:15 am. As the shooting continued we could see the light and hear whoever it was moving along the ridge from right to left they went along north for a while then turned west and crossed the valley either through the pines or on a new pipeline. Still shooting every ten minutes or so.
At around 4 am they were across the valley from the cabin, we occasionally could see a light through the trees. They continued south along the west side of the valley until it comes to a bowl at its southern most end. At about 6:15 or 6:20am they stopped at almost where they started at the east side of the valley. In all total they fired forty two shots in the four hours they were at it.
Some of our guys thought they were jacking deer, and shooting them with night scopes. But we all know that deer don’t just run along pipelines or trails when pushed. Some thought they were trying to finish off a wounded buck. The question is why start at 2:00am, unless that’s when the bar closed.
My thinking is they were trying to consolidate whatever deer that were on the sides of the valley, down into the middle. Now some of the valley is State ground and some is Private Property with very limited road access.
For many years we broke camp and headed home on Wednesday around noon. This year five of us hunted all day Wed. and planed to hunt Thursday in the am. That is until all this shooting happened.
Maybe this is how the other two camps in the area always seem to kill so many bucks each year. The word is that they killed five 9 pointers last year. Not jealous but [censored] curious now!

Why didn't you call the local WCO?? It sure sounds suspect enough to me...Unless they were hunting yotes or something, but still 42 shots from 2am to 6am, something fishy/illegal/suspect going on.

I have to agrre with the others . You heard shooting at 2 am saw the lights and left it go on for almost 4 hours without calling the game commission. I guess it wasnt that important at the time.

Camp is very remote and off the grid.
Limited or no cell service. We thought about firing up the genny and turn on all the outside lights to let them know we were still there. For all we know this may happen every year after we leave. The cousin who ownes the place left on wed. noon, he was the one hurt earlier. We didn't want to come back to find the place burned out, so we stayed dark.
Maybe we should have tried to call out from the hill above us. The cousins putting out inquires with some of the locals we know.

Our camp has been around since '26 and never burned out and vandalized. We "take care" of one of the more prominent and respected locals who live on the mountian. Anything that goes on up there he'll know about it and he takes care of it. We knew early on you that had to be done to get along. Now a couple dozen people watch the place like it is there own...

Sounds like someone was lost from the day before and carried an awful lot of bullets with them.

Galeton has a cell tower so Gaines has to have Verizon service now. You should have tried to figure out what they were doing or called them in.
