Keep a clear exit path? Does this imply that they are reccomending that "run for it" is an option? I thought that retreating or running from a bear was an invitation to a butt whoppin or worse. Activates the bears' prey instinct.

Bears in the Canada wilderness are a whole lot more dangerous to humans than our PA black bears. The statement is made up there that if you are attacked by a black bear you should fight for your life because that is what is at stake. Black bears in Canada actually do kill and eat humans on occasion. You might get away with the old "playing dead" thing with grizzlies, but it isn't a great idea with black bears.
