have caught many over the years while beaver trapping . my catches have gone down the last few years , probably because of my approach .i use nearly all snares and footholds. i'll be setting in the next week or so for mink and fox, cats, have picked up a few in sets for them .either way just release them as the population is bad . think my best year on them was around 6 .
i always ask the question about them at the state convention , get the same answer the last 10 years, waiting for studies to be completed.

They can study a creek that starts in PA and runs into MD where I caught 7 otters in 4 years or so ( on the MD side), within view of PA. I know of 2 accidental takes upstream on the PA side too. There's a good bit of area just south of the Mason Dixon where a MDer can take 10 otters per season. PGC needs to study the adjoining PA counties. I guess cojoining with MD DNR biologists is out of the question for the snobby PGC? LOL

I usually get 1-2 a year and I turn them in.A few of the other local trappers get 1-2 also. We have a very good population here in the NE.Expect to see an otter trapping season in 2 years.

Just had a conversation today with the local WCO about Otters. I never realized we had them around Pymatuning but there is a huge population. He told me that he believes someday we'll have a limited season. He told me a story of a guy this year that was trapping rats with #1 longsprings the guy caught an otter, #1 held it. No biggee, just release it. The guy thought it was a big mink, killed it with a canoe paddle....uh he was cited.

I've never even seen one. Ever. Anywhere. I've spent quite a bit of time on the water here in PA and in the Adirondacks and never laid eyes on one. I think they're neat animals.
