I am considering buying a 12g shotgun. Main reason I am buying is so I have a 12g for shooting clays, but this gun will also be used for hunting as well. It will need to be in either over/under or semi. My budget is around $500 new. So I have the following guns in mind at this point. I am open to suggestions on others as well.

CZ 712
Mossberg 930
Weatherby SA-08

I am currently leaning towards the Weatherby because the reviews I have read make it out to be a very solid gun. I am willing to pay $150 more for it than the CZ if quality is a factor.

Any opinions?

Thanks.

I would probably go with the 930. I would stay away from the budget over/unders. If you really get into the game you can save your money and get a purpose built over and under shotgun that fits you.

Not that I'm trying to rebuke Rob, but most of the Turkish guns I've seen/used are actually very nice and well put together. I looked at a Weatherby 28ga recently and was very impressed with it. I purchased an Escort Magnum 20ga last summer and have yet to have a single issue with it. To boot, most of the Turkish guns come with all the chokes and shims to tune the gun. For $400 I was pleasantly surprised with everything that 20ga came with.

One thing I will warn you about is that O/U's aren't for everyone. I bought a Browning last year that I though would be my everything gun(ducks, trap and sporting clays). It felt great duck hunting, but felt awkward on the clays courses. I ended up going back to my Mod12 for trap and my 11-87 for clays. Before you jump feet first into an O/U you might want to head to a club and see if people don't mind you trying their guns first.

I have an O/U in 20g. It's a Mossberg Silver Reserve. I have fired a few hundred rounds out of it and took it shooting clays last weekend. I have had no problems with it and even bought it used.

Read up on the Franchi Affinity. There are a lot of happy users. It is a Benelli with the Franchi name. They sell for about $700 but your buying a good SG.
